Basketball Plays

After Time Out Zone Quick Hitters

By Brian Williams on February 8, 2017

Today’s post contains two quick hitting plays that you can set up during a time out or to start a quarter or half when you are facing a 2-3 zone defense.

Adjust these sets to fit your players and philosophy and/or take bits and pieces to combine with what you already run against 2-3s.

The plays are from The Best of Special Teams Playbook assembled by Chris Filios. The playbook contains 210 basketball plays from 40 different NCAA teams.

Diagrams created with FastDraw

UNC Wilmington Sprint High Ball Screen

1 passes the ball to 2, gets a return pass, and then reverses to 3 to force the zone to shift.

As 3 passes back to 1, 4 sprints into a ball screen.

5 seals in x5 to open up a drive for 1.

2 can move to an area for a pass from 1 if x4 helps on the drive.

San Francisco Cross Screen

2 starts in the corner and cuts to the opposite wing.

4 and 5 screen in the middle and low defenders of the zone.

After screening in, 4 cuts to the corner on the same side of the floor as 2

5 screens the middle defender and 3 cuts to the ball side block.

Euroleague Man to Man Plays

By Brian Williams on January 25, 2017

These 2 man to man sets are from Scott Peterman’s Euroleague Playbook.

My hope in presenting plays is that you can take them and change them to fit your own needs or to use to brainstorm ways to get your scorers into positions where they can be effective.

Here is a zone offense that I (Coach DeSalvo) have used to prepare for 1-3-1 zone defense.

It is designed to get your best player in the middle of the zone to make a play in the heart of the zone.

Guard Get Trap

brad-stevens-plays1

Looks as if the action will get into STS (Little-Big Cross Screen, Big-Little Down Screen) except defender guarding 2 cheats the screen… 2 comes off of the same side and is wide open…

1 and 5 get into guard get as 2 goes and set cross screen for 4.

2’s defender cheats action, 2 then receives screen from 4.

Pin Pistol Sweep

brad-stevens-plays2

4 sets wide pin-down for 2, 1 and 2 get into pistol action.

2 keeps ball takes a bounce and reverse to 3.

On the air time of the pass, #5 pins in help.

3 drives to the rim.

5 Out Reverse Motion

brad-stevens-plays3

1 reverses through the trail.

As the 5 looks at the 4, 4 sets a wide pin-down for 2.

As this is happening, 5 goes into a DHO with 2.

Basketball Plays: Slip vs. 2-3 Zone

By Brian Williams on October 9, 2016

These two actions to run against a 2-3 zone defense are some notes from Chris Mack, Head Men’s Coach, Xavier University

You can see the archives of their basketball coaching newsletter at this link: Xavier Newsletter

Xavier runs these sets out of their secondary break, but you could use them as quick hitters or after timeout sets as well.
