NBA Sideline Inbounds Plays

By Brian Williams on October 2, 2016

These Plays are from the Arizona Basketball Coaching Newsletter.

If you are interested in being added to their monthly basketball coaching newsletter, email me your:

Name
School/Team
Coaching Position (Head Coach, Assistant)

That is the information they request to add coaches to their list.

With each post I make on the site, I am not prescribing that this is what everyone should do, but rather offering ideas that hopefully will stimulate your thinking to come up with ideas that will fit your needs.

For example, you might need to change the positions that are on the diagrams to put your players in the spots that fit them the best.

The first play was diagrammed by Denis Godlevskiy from a play run by Doc Rivers when he was with the Celtics.

The second play was diagrammed by Coach Alan Peel.

Diagrams created with FastDraw

Boston Celtics SLOB

celtics-slob1

1 starts in the ballside corner and comes to the NBA slot off a screen from 4. (Obviously #4 needs to screen the defender guarding #1. It might be on the other side than the diagram shows.)

1 receives the inbounds pass.

3 cuts through to the opposite corner.

celtics-slob2

5 pins down for 2.

2 sets screen for ball handler & pops out,

celtics-slob3

On pop out action 4 sets flare screen for 2 & rolls to to the basket

1 can use quick pass for the 2 or hit 4 who rolls to the basket

Portland SLOB

portland-slob1

The play begins with #5 setting a back screen for #2.

After #2 clears, #5 will then set a back screen for #4.

The options for the inbounds passer (#3) are #2 and #4 in that order.

portland-slob2

If the lob passes are not open, #2 will clear to the help-side corner and #4 will clear to the ball-side corner.

From here, #5 will turn and set a down screen for #1 who comes and catches between the circles.

If the defense switches, #3 will throw the inbounds pass to #5 who steps back to the ball.

As soon as the ball is inbounded, #3 will fill the corner on his side.

portland-slob3

When #1 catches, he will use a middle ball screen set by #5 and go away from the side on which the ball was inbounded.

As soon as #1 clears the ball screen, #5 will roll to the basket and #3 will fill the slot on his side to maintain defensive balance.

I like the concept of having a counter to your set plays to be able to call.

The NCAA Top Men’s D1 Coaches Playbook is combined with the 2 Guard Front Playbook as a $25 2 Playbook (Digital eBook) Bundle.

By Brian Williams on August 28, 2016

A couple of Screen the Screener sets from Oklahoma and Duke.

They are a part of a Wes Kosel’s Pick the Picker Playbook.”

Wes is on the staff at Colorado College.

I also have a link at the bottom of this post if you would like to download his Pick the Picker Playbook.

The idea is to take bits of pieces of these plays that might fit within your offensive system.

Australia – Point PTP Sprint

By Brian Williams on August 13, 2016

This play was run by the Australian National Team and then diagrammed and contributed by Wes Kosel to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

Wes is a former college basketball coach.

You might not want to use the plays that I post in their entirety, but my hope is that you can take parts of the plays and use them where they fit for your system.

This is what Coach Kosel said about the play:

Australia uses a pick the picker action in this play with a cross screen / down screen combination.

If nothing is there, the big sprints out to set a ball screen.

australia1

1 dribbles off of a high ball screen from 5.

2 screens for 4.

5 rolls into a down screen for 2.

1 passes to 2.

australia2

4 sprints out to set a ball screen for 2.

Lithuania DHO UCLA Shuffle

By Brian Williams on August 13, 2016

This play was run by Lithunia in the Olympics and then diagrammed and contributed by Matt Wheeler to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

Coach Wheeler is the Head Boys Coach at Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida.

This is what he said about the play:

Lithuania ran this unique shuffle cut variation in their opening round game against Brazil.

Typically shuffle cut actions put the player receiving the staggered screen in the weak side corner . This way they can easily come off of the staggered screen after the shuffle screen takes place. In this play, 3 uses the UCLA cut to look for a layup on the strong side.

If 3 isn’t open he moves to weak side block to open up a cutting area for 1, who is using the shuffle screen from 4. 4 & 5 then immediately set a staggered screen for 3. If 3 doesn’t have a shot, Lithuania has added a ball screen option where the point guard sets a back screen for the 5 to free him up for a layup.

lithuania1

1 runs a DHO with 3.

3 turns the corner and passes to 2.

lithuania2

3 makes a UCLA cut off of 5’s screen

lithuania3

4 screens for 1.

4 & 5 set a staggered screen for 3.

2 passes to 3 for the shot.

lithuania4

PNR Option

If 3 doesn’t have the shot, 5 sets a ball screen for 3.

1 screens for 5 on the roll, then pops up top.

5 and spread out for spacing.
