Basketball Plays Florida

By Brian Williams on September 23, 2013

This inbounds play is run from a sideline situation.

From Coach Creighton Burns’ newsletters. If you are interested in receiving his newsletter, contact us and I will put you in touch with Coach Burns.

There are two opportunities for a backscreen lob to the basket and the play finishes with a post

basketball plays

#1 back screens for #5 and #5 rolls and goes to the basket looking for a lob pass from #3.

After setting the screen , #1 steps out to receive a pass.

basketball plays

On the pass to #1 , #4 wil l set a back screen for #2.

If #2 is open , #1 can throw over the top to him.

If #2 is not open , #1 wil l make a pass to #4, and then cut to the opposite side of the court.

#3 gets #2 the ball , and #2 wil l try to feed #5 in the low post.

Basketball Plays Demon

By Brian Williams on July 22, 2013

This play is a last second sideline inbounds play sent to me several years ago by Coach Ken Sartini who unfortunately passed away in January 2015. This is what he had to say about the play:

I designed this play at the end of one game… and we had a guard that was a soccer player so he could make that long over the head skip pass with some power to it. The first time we ran it we got the point guard #1 off the double staggered screen for a three.. he was fouled in the act and hit 3 free throws for the W!

This play is run with limited time on the clock when the pass receiver must catch and immediately shoot with no time for a dribble or pass.

If you are looking for a 3 point shot, 3 and 1 are the players that you are looking for. If all you need is a 2 point shot, then 5 and 4 are also good options.

basketball plays

3 must read the defender.

If 3’s defender (X3) is playing down in the paint, 4 screens X3 and 3 cuts to the paint and then step back for the skip pass from 2 for an immediate shot.

basketball plays

If X3 is playing out on 3 then 3 cuts baseline off double staggered screens by 4 and 1, to the ball-side corner.

After screening for 3, 4 moves to the high-post.

basketball plays

4 then drops down and sets a screen for 1, while 5 moves to the high post and also screens for 1 and makes it another double staggered screen. 1 cuts around the double staggered screen to the point, looking for the pass from 2 and a shot.

basketball plays

After the staggered double screen, 5 slides to the ball-side elbow and 4 moves to the opposite-side low block. The pass from 2 could go to 3, 5, 1, or 4.

If 2’s defender is sagging way off, 2 could get the return pass and shoot if there is enough time on the clock.

Basketball Plays NBA Game Winners

By Brian Williams on January 29, 2013

These game winners were from the University of Washington women’s program basketball coaching newsletter.

Coach Neighbors is now the Head Coach at Arkansas and has plans to continue the newsletter.

Here is what he said about these plays:

“You can never have too many of these in your mind in case situations arise.

Even if you aren’t going to run them with your team, they are nice to have when you are working on your OB defense.

I always have two or three on my practice schedule for our practice squad to run.”

Basketball Plays Need 3

By Brian Williams on January 25, 2013

The play is an end of game set when you need a 3 point shot.

It is diagrammed as a side out play, but can be run as a live ball set by having 3 make a dribble entry to the wing.

It needs at least 5 seconds to allow for a tip in if the initial shot is missed.

With the hammer action on the weak side and the late flare, we should have at least 3 – 3 point opportunities..

In the event there is a deficit of 4 or more, 1 may be able to keep the ball and drive in for quick score. Everyone else is spread out beyond the 3 point line to take away the help – then foul right away and play another play…

Basketball Plays

3 is the inbounder.

5 sets zipper screen on 1 to the top.

After inbounds pass to 1, 3 sets his man up for hand back from 1.

Basketball Plays

5 sets step up screen on 1 for baseline drive.

4 flares 2 to corner 3 point for baseline drive, baseline drift action

4 then pops high to 3 point line…as this occurs, 5 continues to set flare on 3 man for follow action behind 1.

It is designed to run against a man to man defense.

The final action is a screen the screener flare action for a catch, sweep, and drive opportunity.
