NBA Sideline Inbounds Plays

By Brian Williams on October 2, 2016

These Plays are from the Arizona Basketball Coaching Newsletter.

If you are interested in being added to their monthly basketball coaching newsletter, email me your:

Name
School/Team
Coaching Position (Head Coach, Assistant)

That is the information they request to add coaches to their list.

With each post I make on the site, I am not prescribing that this is what everyone should do, but rather offering ideas that hopefully will stimulate your thinking to come up with ideas that will fit your needs.

For example, you might need to change the positions that are on the diagrams to put your players in the spots that fit them the best.

The first play was diagrammed by Denis Godlevskiy from a play run by Doc Rivers when he was with the Celtics.

The second play was diagrammed by Coach Alan Peel.

Boston Celtics SLOB

celtics-slob1

1 starts in the ballside corner and comes to the NBA slot off a screen from 4. (Obviously #4 needs to screen the defender guarding #1. It might be on the other side than the diagram shows.)

1 receives the inbounds pass.

3 cuts through to the opposite corner.

celtics-slob2

5 pins down for 2.

2 sets screen for ball handler & pops out,

celtics-slob3

On pop out action 4 sets flare screen for 2 & rolls to to the basket

1 can use quick pass for the 2 or hit 4 who rolls to the basket

Portland SLOB

portland-slob1

The play begins with #5 setting a back screen for #2.

After #2 clears, #5 will then set a back screen for #4.

The options for the inbounds passer (#3) are #2 and #4 in that order.

portland-slob2

If the lob passes are not open, #2 will clear to the help-side corner and #4 will clear to the ball-side corner.

From here, #5 will turn and set a down screen for #1 who comes and catches between the circles.

If the defense switches, #3 will throw the inbounds pass to #5 who steps back to the ball.

As soon as the ball is inbounded, #3 will fill the corner on his side.

portland-slob3

When #1 catches, he will use a middle ball screen set by #5 and go away from the side on which the ball was inbounded.

As soon as #1 clears the ball screen, #5 will roll to the basket and #3 will fill the slot on his side to maintain defensive balance.

Billy Donovan SLOBs

By Brian Williams on June 22, 2016

Two end of quarter/half/game/end of shot clock sideline inbounds plays from Billy Donovan and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

You will want to put your players in the spots where they can be most effective regardless of whether the positions they play in your system match the traditional numbers that are shown in the plays.

The plays are from Billy Donovan’s Oklahoma City Thunder Playbook (assembled by Gibson Pyper).

2 Golden State Sideline Out of Bounds Plays

By Brian Williams on June 8, 2016

These two Golden State Warriors Side Out Plays are from Scott Peterman’s eBook “101 Plays of the 2016 NBA Playoffs” assembled by John Zall.

You might also be able to tweak these plays and use them, or parts of them, as a part of your half court offense as well.

Golden State Warriors 1 Loop Hammer

This play could also be adapted very easily into a half court set.

Golden-state-slob-1

4 sets down screen for 3

2 inbounds ball to 3

Golden-state-slob-2

4 and 5 set screen for 1 who loops over top to right wing.

3 passes to 1.

Golden-state-slob-3

1 turns corner and dribbles towards baseline.

4 sets hammer screen for 2 to left corner.

4 then pops t o left wing for shot as well.

1 can pass t o 2 or 4 for shot.

Golden State Warriors Scissor Gate

I realize that 2 is starting with the ball inbounds, but this can easily be modified and run as a side out play.

Golden-state-slob-4

4 sets down screen for 5

2 passes t o 5 after cutting t o the perimeter

Golden-state-slob-5

2 and 1 scissor cut off of 5

Golden-state-slob-6

By Brian Williams on May 15, 2016

Coach Vonn Read has submitted several plays from his playbook series The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays to the Coaching Toolbox.

He has also served as an assistant coach in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, Orlando Miracle, and San Antonio Silver Stars.

This is a good End of Game Play from Side out of Bounds.

The 1 player will make a loop cut over the top, with screens set by the 5 and 4 players.

This is a decoy action.

The 2 player will cut hard to the corner, and then backdoor to the basket for a layup.

Run this play against a very aggressive defender.

Coach Read has also put together The Basketball Encyclopedia of plays. You can check them out here: The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays or read more about the books:

NCAA Zone SLOBs

By Brian Williams on May 4, 2016

A couple of plays to run from a sideline inbounds situation against a 2-3 zone.

With a few tweaks, you could also use these as half court set plays against a 2-3 defense.

These plays are from Wes Kosel’s Playbook “Best Zone Sets from the NCAA Season.”

You can get any 2 playbooks from our online store for $25 at this link:

4 playbooks for $35.

michigan-chicago2

5 sets a screen on x2.

michigan-chicago3

2 passes to 4 who passes to 3 on the wing.

1 runs the baseline to the corner for a shot.

5 rolls into the lane.

Coastal Carolina SLOB Zone Runner

1 inbounds the ball to 2.

4 slides below the free throw line.

coastal2

After inbounding the basketball, 1 cuts all the way through to the opposite side.

2 dribbles toward the side that 1 is cutting to, then reverses direction with the purpose of getting x2 to guard the ball.

4 and 5 screen the zone defenders as 3 cuts off their screens for a shot.

SLOB Diagonal Seal 5

By Brian Williams on February 28, 2016

Coach Vonn Read has submitted several plays from his playbook series The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays to the Coaching Toolbox.

Vonn is the associate head coach for the Syracuse women.

He has also served as an assistant coach in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, Orlando Miracle, and San Antonio Silver Stars.

He was an advanced scout for the Orlando Magic as well as The Charlotte Sting.

Diagrams created with FastDraw

A couple of ideas for short seconds inbounds plays (one under and one side) to think about using or adapting this year or filing for next year.

Diagonal Seal 5

sob

This is a good EOG Set for a Layup.

This set capitalizes against a team that switches everything at the End of Games.

The 4 player will pop out to half court and the 2 player will cut to the corner to space the floor.

The 5 player set a diagonal screen for the 1 player, anticipating the switch.

The 5 player will screen and seal X1 on the switch for a lob pass layup.

X5 will be too short to defend the 5 player on the switch.

Also, you have a big on small mismatch on the perimeter.

Stack Rip Lob 51

uob2

This is a good Short Clock or End of Game Play.

The 4 Player will dive to the block and cut to the corner.

The 2 player will space to the opposite Corner.

uob1

The 5 player will dive down the lane line right behind the 4 player.

The 5 player will ask for the ball coming down the lane to set up their defender.

The 1 player will come down the lane right behind the 5 player.

The 1 player will set the back screen lob for the 5 player.

Have the 1 player set the screen so they cannot easily switch the backscreen. X1 should be too short to stop the lob.
