Basketball Drills

Championship Rebounding Drills

By Brian Williams on October 19, 2017

With Coach Jamy Bechler. Coach Becher coached at the NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA levels, as well as both men and women during his coaching career.

He was one of the youngest NCAA head coaches in the nation when he took control of his first program at the age of 27 years old.

Regardless of the school or level of play, his teams have consistently been among the nation’s elite when it comes to rebounding, including 2014 when they set a national record for having a +19.9 rebound margin.

Two drills – for rebounding when guarding a perimeter player.

Hit and Get

Wolf 1v2 to 2v1

By Brian Williams on October 17, 2017

This ideas was contributed by Jordan Peterson to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

Jordan is the Founder and Director of Positionless Basketball. Varsity Assistant at Stillwater High School (MN). Former Graduate Assistant at MSU-Moorhead.

He is a former college player at UW-Eau Claire.

These are Jordan’s comments on the drill:

Drill that emphasizes players working on finishing but also incorporates passing, ball handling and decision making.

One player on offense, two players on defense.

Can give offense greater advantage by starting them further from defense or make it more difficult by making them even with defense.

Drill starts on offensive player’s movement.

Offense tries to get a layup on the opposite end.

After layup: Offensive player is on defense and defensive players are now on offense.

2 on 1 going the opposite direction. Defender should “cat and mouse” to try and slow down offense. Offense should stay spaced and aim to make defender commit and give up basket.

Xavier’s Basketball “Baseball” Shooting Drill

By Brian Williams on October 10, 2017

These are some notes from Chris Mack, Head Men’s Coach at the University of Louisville, and the former head coach at Xavier University.

You can see the archives of their basketball coaching newsletter at this link: Xavier Newsletter

The record by a Xavier Player is 228 by Trevon Bluiett.

The rules for the drill are as follows:

Start at spot #1.

The first 3 made shots at each spot are worth 0 (nothing) points.

Every make after the 3rd make at each spot counts as 1 point.

After a shooter misses for a 3rd time at a spot, they move to the next numbered spot.

Procedure is repeated for all 9 spots.

Diagram created with FastDraw

Score is total points from all 9 spots.

I like the unique scoring approach for this drill to add some variety to the drills you use.

You can adapt the scoring system or the number of spots for your needs.

Circle 4 on 4 Defensive Drill

By Brian Williams on October 5, 2017

This drill was contributed by Jordan Petersen to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

These are Jordan’s comments on the drill:

Drill to work on defensive communication as well as closing out to help.

Can add the offense circling up to add more of a challenge to the defense and have the offense work on finding/maintaining spacing.

Coach starts with the ball.

Defense circles up.

Players are constantly communicating who they are guarding while circling.

When coach passes ball to a player, the defense closes out to players and correct help.

On the catch 4v4 is live.

Can add restrictions that a pass must be made before attacking/shooting or they must run a certain action before shooting.

Can add the offense circling as well to challenge the defense to stop the ball first and match up with closest man as well as challenging the offense to maintain/find good spacing.

Defense closes out to help.
