Basketball Drills

Dribble Hand Off Bounce Off Hit the Diver

By Brian Williams on August 10, 2017

This dribble hand off drill to work on hitting the diver is from Layton Westmoreland’s Ultimate Scoring Drill Book

Diagrams created with FastDraw

DHO bounce off Hit the Dive

Game Scenario

Player will start with the ball on the elbow, and dribble to the wing to initiate the hand off.

Once the guard takes the hand off and bounces off to get around the hedge, the big must dive hard to the rim while the hedge is concerned with the ball handler.

Player will then make a high pass to the diver as they fly to the rim, catch with two hands, power dribble and finish jumping off of two feet.

Breakdown Drill

Like any drill, you can add more complexity once you have taught and repeated the techniques that you want to teach.

You can add a helping defender or whatever else you need to add to teach proper decision making.

Dribble Hand Off Bounce Off Finishing Drill

By Brian Williams on August 10, 2017

This dribble hand off finishing drill is from Layton Westmoreland’s Ultimate Scoring Drill Book

Diagrams created with FastDraw

DHO bounce off finishing drill

Game Scenario

Player will set defender up with quick cut inside, and then sprint to the hand off.

Post will dribble to the wing to initiate the hand off.

When the defender x5 hedges high on the hand off to cover the drive, ball handler must punch their inside foot towards the hedge and bounce away from the coverage, allowing room to read and react.

Player will then re-attack once the hedge drops and before their defender x2 can recover back into the play, getting to the rim for a finish.

Breakdown Drill

Player will start on the wing with a coach/player at the elbow to initiate the hand off.

Player will cut quickly to set up the defense and then sprint to the ball, and initiate the bounce off dribble for separation.

No more than 2 dribbles to bounce off.

Player will then re-attack to the rim to finish with their outside hand.

Make 7 from each wing.

Transition 1 v 1

By Brian Williams on August 1, 2017

These two one on one drills were contributed by Jordan Peterson to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

Jordan is the Founder and Director of Positionless Basketball. Varsity Assistant at Stillwater High School (MN). Former Graduate Assistant at MSU-Moorhead. Former college player at UW-Eau Claire.

This are Jordan’s comments on the first drill:

Transition offense is a huge part of the game.

In this game like shooting drill, players will be working on scoring in transition.

A defensive player will be closing out on the offense in the corner.

The offensive player will have to read the defender to see if they should shoot it or drive it.

Transition 1v1

Shooter (1) starts at the three point line extended.
Defender (2) starts at the coaching box line.
Ball handler (3) or coach starts near half court.
Game starts on ball handlers movement.
Player 2 sprints to try to defend player 1 in the corner.
Player 3 passes to player 1, who tries to score off of a catch and shoot three, pull-up, lay up, side step. Can add that the offense can not score in the lane.

1v1 Contact Finishing

Defender stands at the elbow facing the basket.

Offense is on the baseline and dribbles out to the defender and goes around the defender.

Once the offense turns the corner it is live.

Offense is getting shoulder tip hip/chest and trying to cut off or veer defense to finish.

ADD ON: Dribble decision making/change of direction move can be added. Defender can lift up right or left arm to signal what way the offense must go around.

Players rotate offense to defense.

Run the drill on both sides of the floor.

Team Shooting Drill: “UConn”

By Brian Williams on July 30, 2017

I received these two shooting drills in an email from Dennis Hutter, Head Women’s Basketball Coach at North Dakota.

His website, www.coachhutter.com . has more shooting, individual development workouts, and leadership videos.

These drills might not fit the skill level of all of your players or be the types of shots your players get in games.

The philosophy of this site is to use the ideas presented and adapt them to fit what you need to be able to do:

Here is what Coach Hutter said about the two drills:

UConn:

This is a TEAM shooting drill that is made competitive through time and score. The goal of the drill is to try and have your team make 80 total shots in 5:00. The team is only allowed six basketballs for this drill. The drill is broken down into minute-long segments of shots as follows:

0:00-1:00 – Corner 3’s
1:00-2:00 – Straight Cut 3’s
2:00-3:00 – Top of the Key 3’s
3:00-4:00 – Straight Cut 3’s – opposite side from start
4:00-5:00 – Corner 3’s – opposite side from start

“60 Point” Shooting

The object of the drill is to try and make 60 total shots. There are five spots at which you can shoot from: the corner, wing, top of key, wing and corner. Start in a corner and continue to shoot at each spot until you have missed 2 IN A ROW. Once you have missed two shots in a row, you move to the next spot. The goal is to make 60 shots before missing two shots in a row from the final corner spot.

Steve Prohm Skill Development Drills

By Brian Williams on July 13, 2017

These two skill development videos are with Iowa State Men’s Coach Steve Prohm.

The purpose of the post is not to evaluate the footwork of these players in the video.

It is probably the first time they have done the drill.

They are there to demonstrate the drill.

As a coach, it is up to you to teach your players the proper footwork to be quick without traveling in the drills and then carry that over to games.

The video is a YouTube video so make sure that you are on a server that allows YouTube access.

Transition 3s

10 in 1 Shooting Drill

By Brian Williams on July 11, 2017

This shoting drill came from the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

The drill was contributed by Kyle Gilreath, Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Astronaut High School, Titusville, FL. Kyle is also the author of the basketball coaching website, Words on the Bounce.

Coach Gilreath was a graduate manager for Billy Donovan at Florida and learned the drill from Coach Donovan.

This is what Kyle had to say about the drill:

This is one of my favorite shooting drills of all time. It combines shooting, conditioning, and mental toughness to fight through fatigue. I got this drill from Embry-Riddle Head Coach Steve Ridder many years ago when I was a youngster attending team camp with my dad. This drill will test any player who thinks they are a great shooter and make them prove it!

Goal:
Good Players: 10
Great Players: 11
Elite Players: 12+

1 Minute on the Clock

Player starts at half-court with a coach or teammate under the rim with a ball (passer).

When the clock starts the player runs in and shoots a 3-pointer.

Make or miss the player sprints back and touches half-court and sprints back in for another 3-pointer.

This is repeated for 1 minute.
