Basketball Plays: Warriors SLOB Need 3

By Brian Williams on October 19, 2015

This play to get a three point shot came from the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

The play was submitted to FastModel by Andreas Barthel.

The idea of the play is to use it at the end of a game when you need a 3 point basket.

It is a triple decoy play that forces numerous switches.

Note: The numbers are to distinguish between the 5 different players on the floor, not to say that you have to put a traditional “5” player (i.e. center or post player), or a traditional “4” player (i.e. power forward) in those spots if you run the play. If you need a 3 point shot, at the end the game, IMO it is better to put 5 players who are dressed for the game that give you the best chance of accomplishing that.

Note #2: The purpose of this post is not to say that you should run this exact play. But, I hope it does motivate some discussion and thinking among your coaching staff as to how you can possibly incorporate some of the actions in this play to your team’s end of game situations, or as to what you can do to counter teams that switch everything at the end of the game in this situation.

Warriors SLOB Need 3

2 cuts to the ball side corner.

warriors2

4 uses a staggered screen set by 1 and 5.

The design is to force the first switch between X4 and X5.

warriors3

1 then comes off a down screen by 5.
Looking to create a second switch between X1 and X4.

4 turns and screens X5 which prevents x5 from executing a third switch with X4 (Barnes) who is forced to trail 1 (Curry)

3 (Iguodala) passes the ball to 1 (Curry)

warriors4

1 begins to drive the ball away from the screening action to force X5 to help.

5 screens X1.

4 pops out for the 3 point shot.

Basketball Plays: Eurobasket Tournament Sets

By Brian Williams on October 15, 2015

These 2 plays from the Eurobasket Tournament eBook Playbook (assembled by Kyle Pertuset)

My hope in presenting plays is that you can take them and change them to fit your own needs or to use to brainstorm ways to get your scorers into positions where they can be effective.

For example, you might be able to find ways to screen for your ball screeners in some of your sets to help them get to their ball screen without their defender.

These plays are a part of this week’s eBook bundle.

You can create your own bundle by selecting any 4 of the eBooks that we have featured over the past few years for $35.00. Click here for the choices.

Estonia Horns Stagger

basketball-plays1

1 dribbles to the right wing.

5 screens for 4

1 runs a dribble hand off with 2

4 sets a ball screen for 2 after the dribble hand off.

basketball-plays2

1 continues to the other side to come off a stagger from 3 and 5

2 comes off the ball screen and can hit the roller or 1 coming of the screens.

You could include 3 spacing with 5 flashing to the lane if that fits your needs.

Czech Republic Post Entry Triple Stagger

You could also use this as a way to isolate your 1 in the post if that is to your advantage.

basketball-plays3

1 passes to 3 and cuts to the block off a screen from 5

4 passes to 3.

basketball-plays4

3 enters the ball to 1 in the low post.

3, 4, and 5 set a triple stagger for 2 to cut behind the ball for a possible 3 point shot.

basketball-plays-1

This is a good 3-point set right out of transition for your 4 player (Shooter) at the end of the game.

The 1 player will pass the ball to the 2 player and then cut to the opposite corner.

basketball-plays-2

The 5 player will step up to set the fake ball screen, which sets up the 3-point shot.

The 2 player will drive the ball hard to the baseline, looking to force help by X1 or X4.

If you only need 2 points, a lot of times this action will result in a layup.

basketball-plays-3

After faking the ball screen, the 5 player will screen in on X4 in the paint.

X4 will usually help on the penetration by the 2 player, which opens up the 3-pointer by the 4 player.

The 4 player will sprint to the wing off the screen by the 5 player for the 3-point shot.

Basketball Plays: Flash Screen Down Zone Set

By Brian Williams on October 5, 2015

Today’s post is a set to run against a 2-3 zone to get the ball into a post player in the lane.

Coach Vonn Read has submitted several plays from his playbook series The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays to the Coaching Toolbox.

You can also see more of his plays in the Related Posts links at the bottom of this post.

Vonn has also served as an assistant coach in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, Orlando Miracle, and San Antonio Silver Stars. He was an advanced scout for the Orlando Magic as well as The Charlotte Sting.

If you are looking for other resources you can click here to see our products that relate to attacking zone defenses. There are some sample videos included in these as well: Zone Offense Resources

Diagrams created with FastDraw

Even if you don’t run the play exactly as it is drawn up, I hope it sparks your thinking and discussion to improve what you currently run against a zone.

12 Flash Screen Down Middle X5 Trojan

basketball-plays-flash-screen

This is a good quick hitter for a post shooter against the Zone.

The 1 player will pass to the wing.

basketball-plays-flash-screen2

The offense will fully reverse the ball to get the zone moving.

basketball-plays-flash-screen3

On ball reversal, the defense will have 2 players on the ball (bumping).

Once the 2 player catches the ball, the 5 player will fake flash to the ball and then downscreen on X5.

The 2 player will pass to the 1 player, who will pass to the 4 player flashing up the lane for the quick jump shot in the paint.

If X5 gets through the screen, go high low to the 5 player for the layup.
