Basketball Plays: White Overload Zone Attack

By Brian Williams on August 24, 2015

This zone attack set is a part of Coach Lee DeForest’s Princeton Offense System.

This set is a part of Coach Princeton Basketball: Keys to Unlocking the Backdoor Offense, but could be run as a quick hitter to complement whatever you run.

This week’s featured eBook bundle is the Coach Princeton Basketball: Keys to Unlocking the Backdoor Offense eBook along with the Practice Plans and Drills for a Princeton Style Offense eBook.

You can see their descriptions at this Link:

Coach Princeton Basketball: Keys to Unlocking the Backdoor Offense & Princeton Style Offense Practice Plans Playbook

Your personnel might not fit those exact descriptions.

Your best shooter might also be your best scorer, etc…

You will just need to decide if your personnel will be successful in this alignment.

If you’re not sure whether this or any set that you are considering using will work, I would recommend to use practices to experiment and see how well they work for you.

I do like the idea of using consecutive cuts against a zone–having a cutter fill an area where another player just cut away from (diagram 4 below)

Force the zone to match up and reverse the ball quick to the shooter (2).

Look for the shot or the 5 on the baseline.

This action should open up the short corner.

basketball-plays-overloas-zone4

5 has the ball. This is the goal of the offense.

The 4 dives to the rim and weak side.

The 3 follows behind the 4 looking for the pass from the 5 for the layup.

The 2 spots up for a kick out.

basketball-plays-overloas-zone5

On reversal to 2 and to 1 the offense resets to the other side.

Look for the 3 filling the 1’s spot as a quick reversal often leaves this open.

Basketball Plays: 3 San Antonio Spurs Sets

By Brian Williams on August 13, 2015

These 3 San Antonio Spurs quick hitters are from the Basketball HoopsSoop San Antonio Spurs Playbook.

I hope you can integrate at least something from these three actions to help your system.

This 4 out 1 in set play is from the 2014 San Antonio Spurs Playbook that was compiled by Wes Kosel

The Spurs Playbook and the 2014-15 Golden State Warriors Playbook make up this weekend’s featured eBook bundle. You can find out more about them at this link:

Spurs and Warriors Playbooks

If you have any questions about the Playbooks, please feel free to email me or call/text me at (317) 721-1527.

If these sets do not fit your players, I hope you can at least get an idea from them that you might be able to incorporate into what you currently do.

Basketball Plays: Box and 1 “Gut”

By Brian Williams on August 10, 2015

These ideas for a quick hitter and a counter to run against a Box and 1 Combination Defense came from the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

“Gut” looks to get the ball inside against a box and 1 defense.

Contributed by Rory Hamilton, Norman North High School

Gut Box and 1 Quick Hitter

The play starts by the point guard passing a guard on the right-wing. The guarded player then goes to opposite elbow area while a pass to the corner is designed to bring the bottom player of the zone out away from the block.

After passing to the corner the guard cuts hard looking for a quick give and go and one the point guards catch screens the weak side of the zone bringing the 4 man right into the gut of the zone for a quick pass. After setting a screen the guard will then receive a screen by the post player creating some misdirection and difficulty for the defense.

FastTradePreview1

Gut is designed to take advantage of the bottom two players in a box and one.

It is initiated with a pass to the wing player.

Offensive player #3 is the player being guarded man to man.

FastTradePreview2

The guarded player then cuts to the opposite elbow while the ball side guard passes to corner/Short corner area.

FastTradePreview3

2 man immediately cuts to the hoop looking for a quick give & go and 1 man fills across.

FastTradePreview4

2 player finishes cut and screens weakside box defender bringing 4 player to “gut” of the zone while 1 man takes a misdirection dribble towards top of zone.

5 man then screens in bottom zone defender and 2 comes off baseline screen.

Gut “Again” Counter

The counter off of “gut” is “gut again” where we use the same action as before but we are now trying to screen the bottom two defenders in the box allowing our 5 man to catch again in the gut of the zone.

Under Triangle and Two Attack

By Brian Williams on August 3, 2015

This idea for a quick hitter came from the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

“Under” looks to give you several different scoring options out of one play against a triangle and 2 defense.

The initial alignment is a 1-4 high with one of your guarded players at the point and the other at either the left or right-wing.

Contributed by Rory Hamilton, Norman North High School

Under Triangle and Two Attack

FastTradePreview1

1-4 High Alignment with point and wing player guarded man to man.

The play starts with a pass to the high post player on the same side as the other player being guarded man to man.

FastTradePreview2

The post catches and faces while strong side elbow and wing player set a double flare screen for the point guard for a potential quick shot.

FastTradePreview3

After setting the screen the 3 man dives to block for a potential post pass if X5 defender helps on the flare screen.

On the weak side the 2 and 4 are getting ready to set a baseline double screen.

FastTradePreview4

After 3 cuts to the block, the 5 man sets PNR with the 1 man and looks to short roll.

The point looks to hit 3 man coming off the weak side double screen.

FastTradePreview5
After setting the double screen, the 4 man steps up to mid-post area and 2 man continues to screen low defender of the triangle to bring 5 man right “under” the basket for a score.

Attacking a 1-2-2 Defense

By Brian Williams on July 29, 2015

This video with some ideas for attacking a 1-2-2 or 3-2 zone defense is a follow up to a similar post from a couple of weeks ago on attacking a 1-3-1 zone defense.

My hope is that you can get an idea or two to add to what you currently use to attack a 1-2-2 defense.

Or, that it at least gets you to put some sustained thought to what you are doing now and how you could do it better.

The video was put together by high school hall of fame coach and current college assistant coach, Doug Schakel.

The video is a You Tube video, so please make sure that the server you are using allows You Tube access.

The video is about 22 minutes long. You will need to click the play arrow to start it.
