Basketball Drills

Half Court High Low Rebounding Drill

By Brian Williams on June 7, 2022

This post is a drill from Mike Nieghbors from his days at Arkansas.

Coach Neighbors is currently an assistant with the Dallas Wings.

Like all drills that you see other programs use, you can either modify it or take parts of these ideas for your use and your needs. I hope to provide food for thought for you to use as a place to start for ideas to improve your program.

Pressure Shooting Challenge Drill

By Brian Williams on June 7, 2022

Provided by our friends at Dr. Dish Basketball,

This drill requires shooters to make 2 consecutive shots from 5 spots for a total of 10 makes.  The score on the drill is the amount of time that it takes the shooter to complete the 10 makes

You can and should modify any of the drills and how they are timed or scored to make them fit your needs or to add variety to your skill development work.

Some ideas to modify or add variety to the drill are:
1.  If you are working with younger players, require them to make 2 shots from each spot, but they don’t have to be 2 in a row.
2.  Change the spots.
3.  Add in extra spots so that the shooter has to make 12 or 14 shots.
4.  For younger players, cap the time at 60, 90, or 120 seconds or whatever is appropriate and their score is the number of shots that they can make in that specified time.
5.  Rather than going for a specific time, have players shooting head to head at each end and the first one to complete 10 shots is the winner.
6.  The best modifications will be ones that you create to fit your players.

Decision Making Progression

By Brian Williams on April 13, 2022

FIBA Player Development Coach Carlos Frade shows a drill to teach 2 on 1 decision making.

There are two drills in the post. The first one is a one on one drill that is good to teach to attack the front hand of the defender closing out.

The second drill is the one that I really like. it is a very good 2 on 1 decision making and is scored based on how efficiently (minimizing passes and dribbles) the 2 offensive players can MAKE a shot.

You can and should modify any of the drills to make them fit your needs or to add variety to your skill development work.

Relocation Shooting Challenge Drill

By Brian Williams on February 17, 2022

This skill development drill is provided by Dr. Dish Basketball.

IMPACT Basketball founder Joe Abunassar has a drill that you can use in your spring and summer skill development workouts and create a challenge for your team or individuals.

In this drill, the players shoot until they make 20 and their score is based on how long it takes them to hit 20 shots. With the movement that is involved in the drill and the amount of time that it will take to get to 20 makes, the drill is also a conditioner and a toughness drill.

You can and should modify any of the drills to make them fit your needs or to add variety to your skill development work.
