Basketball Drills

Nugget Shooting Drill

By Brian Williams on November 21, 2022

A short video from our friends at Dr. Dish Basketball.

The coach presenting in this video is Special Jennings, Head Girls Basketball Coach at Montverde Academy in in Montverde, Florida.

The drill is a great drill to work on developing the ability to make shots when your players are tired.

To win part one of the Nugget Drill, the players must make 3 shots in a row. If they miss 2 in a row, they run a down and back. They are sliding from the wing to the corner.

In part 2, players sprint into a shot from half court with the same rules for the drill–make 3 in a row, you win, miss two in a row, you run a down and back and start over.

Flip the Screen and Streak Free Throw Shooting Drills

By Brian Williams on September 27, 2022

Two short video from our friends at Dr. Dish Basketball.

Both of the videos are good ideas for some shooting work that your players can do prior to the start of practice and can also be used in the skill development portion of your practices.

Flip the Screen Shooting Drill

The video below is in the YouTube shorts format so it will look a little different than the YouTube videos that we have posted in the past. The format is narrower than a traditional video.

I like the idea of shooting fts in streaks. I believe it is a good way to put some pressure on the shooter. The thing to watch is to make sure that the shooters do not speed up their free throw routine. They need to use the exact routine in the drill that they do in a game or the drill will be worthless. As Pro Football Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Knox said, “Practice without improvement is meaningless.”

3 Partner Game Movement Shooting Drills

By Brian Williams on August 23, 2022

A short video from our friends at Dr. Dish Basketball.

I really like these gamelike shooting drills that players can work on in pairs.

If this were an organized workout with a coach, I would not want the player wearing a hat. Please don’t let that detract from this post. The purpose is to give you ideas as to if this type of drill would help your players improve, not to focus on what they are wearing. My guess is that their coach is happy that they are working on their games!

Drill #1 Pitch & Ghost Screen, against the Grain Hook Pass, Inside Hand release from a Dribble Hand Off
Drill #2 Drive & kick with a flare cut and return pass
Drill #3 Attack the nail, kick & pitch, against the grain hook pass.

These are ideas to stimulate your thinking. You probably have different actions that you run. I hope this video inspires you to create some drills that put your actions together. I leave it up to you to put a timing and scoring system with them.

Decision Making Progression

By Brian Williams on August 23, 2022

Provided by our friends at Dr. Dish Basketball

FIBA Player Development Coach Carlos Frade shows a drill to teach 2 on 1 decision making.

There are two drills in the post.  The first one is a one on one drill that is good to teach to attack the front hand of the defender closing out.

The second drill is the one that I really like.  it is a very good 2 on 1 decision making and is scored based on how efficiently (minimizing passes and dribbles)  the 2 offensive players can MAKE a shot.

28 in 2 Transition Drill

By Brian Williams on July 4, 2022

In this post Bradley University Head Coach Brian Wardlen shares his 28 in 2 Transition Drill.

This drill serves the purpose of getting the players passing and catching on the run as well as communicating.

Coach Wardle uses practice video that shows clearly how to run the drill but here is a basic explanation.

There are three lines of players stationed one at halfcourt (outlet line) and one under each basket (rebounding lines).

Two cones are placed a few feet from the sideline on the side opposite the outlet line.

The drill begins with the player under one basket passing to the player at halfcourt. The player at halfcourt that receives the outlet pass then passes to another player stationed on the opposite halfcourt who has cut to the basket for a lay-up. (this player is only stationed here to start the drill)

The player that passed the ball for the lay-up sprints across the court and around the cones and will become the next shooter.

The player under the basket rebounds the ball and passes to the person at halfcourt who then passes to the player running around the cones for a lay-up at the other end.

The shooter simply gets in the rebounding line at the basket that they shot at.

The drill continues in this fashion.

The goal is to make 28 lay-ups in 2 minutes.

It will be difficult to reach this standard in the ball is dribbled, dropped or any lay-ups are missed.
