Basketball Plays Ball Screen Offense

By Brian Williams on July 18, 2014

These sets are from Coach Scott Peterman’s (Basketball Hoopscoop) Comprehensive Ball Screen Playbook.

The first 4 diagrams are ideas on countering against a team that traps your on ball screens.

The last several diagrams are a quick hitter for setting several screens on the basketball.

It is a part of this week’s featured eBook bundle is the Princeton Hybrid Offense eBook along with the Comprehensive Ball Screen Playbook eBook. You can see their descriptions at this Link: Princeton Hybrid Offense and Ball Screen Playbooks

If you have any questions about the Playbooks, please feel free to email me or call/text me at (317) 721-1527.

Here is a short list from the eBook as to why you might want to use a Ball Screen Offense. Whether you agree or disagree, it might help you clarify your own beliefs about offense regardless of what offense you utilize.

– basic pick and roll is hard to guard
– use the pick and roll for various reason

1. get ball to post deeper, with fewer fronts and less weakside help.
2. get shooter open off of screens with weaker or no stunts.
3. create best matchup
4. good for team with multiple guards.
5. Players like it.
6. Easy to teach “the more you give the more you get”
7. There is always some advantage on the court.
8. Allow you to hide a players deficiency
9. Least Amount of Turnovers withing offense
10. Keeps ball in ballhandlers hands.
11 Score in least amount of Passes

Attacking a Ball Screen Trap

Diagrams created with FastDraw

basketball-plays3

“NAIL” CALL

When the ball handler is trapped, it is important that he treats this like a “press offense” situation, with 3 outlets and a long diagonal pass.

So when 1 is trapped 4 spaces to corner, 2 steps up to get behind the trap and 5 flashes to elbow.

basketball-plays4

basketball-plays5

Here we have a trap on a side ball screen, with a guard underneath the ball screen. (loaded side)

The post must roll on the ball screen because of the guard in the corner. The other post is high in the alley.

When the post rolling sees a trap he turns back and comes to the ball as the middle outlet.

The wing in the corner will elevate a be an outlet pass.

The opposite post moves up to be an outlet also.

basketball-plays6

If 5 catches the ball at the elbow he looks to the baseline to 3 and 2 cutting to the rim.

Quick Hitter Baseline Flash

basketball-plays10

2 will go under the two posts on the baseline

3 will go over the top.

When 3 goes over, 5 will flash to the elbow.

1 hits 5 at the elbow

basketball-plays11

3 will plant and go backdoor. 5 looks at 3 on the backdoor cut

1 cuts away to allow tiime for 3 to clear.

1 will come around for a HANDOFF from 5.

4 will set a corner screen for 2 coming up

basketball-plays12

5 fakes the handoff and takes a bounce towards the NAIL.

2 continues off the screen and get a DRIBBLE HANDOFF from 5.

4 will follow 2 after setting the screen

3 has finished his backdoor cut to the corner.

basketball-plays13

We are now into our high low set.

2 will look for 5 on the roll.

2 reverses the ball to 4.

basketball-plays14

4 reverses the ball to 3 and sprints for a ballscreen

basketball-plays15

4 flares to the short corner after ballscreening .

5 tries to pin inside by the rim.

3 kicks the ball out to 2

2 looks inside to 5 on the pin.

basketball-plays16

5 was not open on the pin

2 runs a DRIBBLE HANDOFF with 1 in the corner

5 elevates behind the DRIBBLE HANDOFF and set a BALLSCREEN FOR 1

1 attacks off the ballscreen

5 rolls to the short corner and 4 pins inside

Billy Donovan Celtic 50 Shooting Drill

By Brian Williams on July 17, 2014

This drill was posted by Coach Jim Ponchak in Fast Model Sports Plays and Drills Library

The drill is from Billy Donovan when he coached at Florida and allows the opportunity for players to compete against their own personal best, against other players, or against established team standards.

I like to end shooting workouts with a drill that requires toughness and forces players to shoot when fatigued. One way to do that is to set a certain number of makes that is in line with the players’ skill level, but that will also push them past their comfort zone.

This is one of those drills.

Here is how the drill works:

– Shooter makes 10 from each spot without stopping

– Change spots after making 10

– Time how long it takes to get 50 makes

– Passer need to pass to the inside shoulder to lead the shooter into the shot

– Shooter needs to constantly prepare for the shot

– Beat the pass as a shooter by getting feet ready and being set to shoot before the ball arrives

– Shoot from the corner, wing, top, wing, and corner

Basketball Drills Man Down Drill

By Brian Williams on July 16, 2014

This drill is from Dallas Wings Assistant Coach Mike Neighbors.

Great drill to work both sides of the ball simultaneously.

Can be made competitive in a variety of ways.

Can be played possession by possession or for time depending what you are looking for that practice.

Purple starts out on defense with 4 players defending 5 gold players.

The 5th purple player must stay on their offensive end at all times but can position themselves wherever they choose to set up.

<— Gold plays on offense until they score, turn the ball over, or purple rebounds a missed shot. —> In transition purple becomes the attacker with one gold team player designated to stay “back”

basketball-drills-man-down1

Drill repeats continuously until you choose to stop.

Things it emphasizes:

– talking in transition to know who is getting back and who is staying back

– attacking in transition with long pass, quick outlet, hard advance dribble

– playing in the half court in scramble mode

– identifying personnel and defending accordingly

basketball-drills-man-down2

Things it emphasizes (continued):

– locating the open player

– spacing

– balance of crashing offensive boards and sprinting back

You can also manipulate the foul rules to distort the game for the offense or the defense. Institute pass or dribble limits. Can play to a score or to a time. One of our players came up with, was play five trips until all five players have been the “back” person. As always, let us know ways you tweak the drill to fit your system.

Basketball Plays Roll Jet 54

By Brian Williams on July 14, 2014

This play is a pick and roll slip play

Coach Vonn Read has submitted several plays from his playbook series The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays to the Coaching Toolbox.

Coach Read has also served as an assistant coach in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, Orlando Miracle, and San Antonio Silver Stars.

He was an advanced scout for the Orlando Magic as well as The Charlotte Sting.

basketball-plays-roll-jet1

The 5 player will step out to get the pass from the 1 player.

The 3 player will cut to the wing and the 2 player will cut to the corner.

basketball-plays-roll-jet2

The 1 player will screen down for the 4 player.

The 4 player will pop out for the pass and then reverse the ball to the 1 player.

basketball-plays-roll-jet3

The 4 player will sprint over to set the screen and then execute a slip cut to the basket for the layup.

X4 is in a great position to defend the pick and roll but also in danger of getting beat on the slip.

basketball-plays-roll-jet4

X5 is usually looking to help on the slip if they are aware.

The 5 player will sprint over to set the ball screen right behind the 4 player, which will usually
occupy X5.

If X5 does help on the slip, the 1 player should be able to come off the pick and roll clean for the jump shot.

X5 will be late to recover. X5 cannot help on the slip and cover the pick and roll at the same time.

X5 has to make a decision on what to cover!!

Coach Read has also put together The Basketball Encyclopedia of plays. You can check them out here: The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays or read more about the books:
