Rebounding Drills

Chris Mack Attitude Rebounding Drill

By Brian Williams on June 1, 2017

This video is with Louisville’s Chris Mack (at Xavier when this video was filmed) coaching a rebounding drill that he describes as an attitude drill.

Split your team into two teams. Pair players to compete against each other who are similar in size.

The team that wins the most one on one rebounding battles is the winning team for the drill. To add an element of pressure to any drill you run, make the winning team “validate” their win by making a free throw. Choose one player to shoot the validation free throw. If he or she misses, then the losing team gets a chance to become the winning team by making a free throw.

You might not like how much physicality Coach Mack allows in the drill. You will need to decide if you want to only allow contact that would be allowed in a game, or if you will allow more.

The video is a YouTube video so make sure that you are on a server that allows YouTube access.

The video is 4 minutes long.

Rebounding League

By Brian Williams on April 20, 2017

This competitive team rebounding drill is demonstrated by Bradley Men’s Coach Brian Wardle.

This rebounding drill to emphasize to your players the importance of competing to rebound is scored over a series of practices.

The drill is a 3 minute drill.

You get a point for a defensive rebound and get to stay on defense with the inside rebounding position.

The idea of the post is to stimulate ideas. You should change the rules, scoring, timing, expectations, techniques, and emphasis of any other coaches’ drills that you see anywhere to fit your team’s needs.

There is sound with the video, so please make sure that your sound is on.

The video is hosted on YouTube, so you will need to be on a network that allows you to access that site.

Close Quarters Rebounding Drill

By Brian Williams on January 10, 2017

A rebounding drill from Coach Justin Remington, Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at San Bernardino Valley College.

Coach Remington is also a basket instructor for PGC.

His Twitter feed is @Coach_JRem

I have a link at the bottom of the post for you to access the entire pdf of his Favorite Practice Drills.

The drill is not game-like, but in my opinion it does simulate inside defenders moving to establish defensive positioning and then having to get rebounding position when a shot is taken.

Hopefully you can tweak it in a way where it can be added to your drillbook.

Or, it can be used as a new drill here in the second half of the season.

There are several ways that you can make the drill competitive: Split into 2s, 3s, split the team into two teams, you stay in on defense until you get 3 rebounds in a row, a point per rebound, see which pair can get the most consecutive rebounds.

3 Team Rebounding Drill

By Brian Williams on November 7, 2016

This competitive 3 team rebounding drill is presented by Yale Men’s Coach James Jones.

You will need 3 color jerseys to run the drill.

Each player has to score to get out of the drill. If a player commits a foul, he or she has to score twice to get out of the drill.

The team that wins the drill is the first team to have all of their players score and get out of the drill. You will either need to have the same number of players on each team or have one player go twice on the teams that have fewer players.

There is sound with these videos, so please make sure that your sound is on.

The videos are You Tube videos, so you will need to be able to access that site.

Half Court Hustle Rebounding Drill

By Brian Williams on August 25, 2016

The following offensive rebounding drill is provided by Coach Jamy Bechler. Coach Bechler has coached several teams that have achieved several national rankings for rebounding. During the 2013-’14 season, they led the nation in Rebounding Margin (+19), Rebounds per Game (55 rpg) and Offensive Rebounding Average (21/game).

They were among the NAIA’s Top-10 in each of these categories in all of Coach Bechler’s years at Martin Methodist College. While at Bryan College, Bechler’s teams were known for their toughness and rebounding. In his three years, the Lady Lions finished in the NAIA’s Top-10 for Rebounding Margin culminating in an incredible +18 rpg average during the 2009-2010 season.

The statistics show that more field goals are missed than made, so the philosophy he instills is that “every missed shot is a pass to me.”

The drill below is a sample from his Championship Rebounding Video.

Reverse Reaction Rebounding Drill

By Brian Williams on August 2, 2016

This rebounding drill is among the thousands of resources for both coaches and player available from basketballhq.

They have several more videos as well as basketball coaching resource articles.

Make sure that your speakers are on to hear the narration and that you can access YouTube to see the videos.

Like everything I post on the site, you will need to tweak the drill to fit your philosophy and needs.

You might want the rebounder to simulate the movements of a defensive possession rather than doing lane slides.

You might want them to simulate boxing out, hit and get, or whatever technique you use.

You also can make the shots miss off the rim rather than the backboard.
