Rebounding and Finishing Drill

Rebounding Toughness Drill

This is a 2-on-2 drill. Split your players into two teams and put 4 minutes on the clock. Each group goes for 45 seconds at a time. The ball is dead if it hits the ground. The losing team runs sprints. You will want to change the rules to fit your needs.

Basketball Drills: Tennessee Rebounding Drills

By Brian Williams on October 23, 2015

These rebounding drills are with former Tennessee’s women’s coach Holly Warlick

These are You Tube videos, so you will need to be able to view You Tube videos on the server you are on. At times schools will block You Tube.

Make sure your sound is on as you watch. Click the play arrow to see the video..

I like the idea of having the rebounding team look to push the ball on offense after securing the rebound to make your rebounding drills more game-like.

Numbers Rebounding Drill

5 offensive rebounders outside the three point arc. They are numbered 1 through 5.

3 defenders with 10 toes in the paint.

Coach calls 3 numbers and those 3 numbers from the perimeter offensive rebounders crash the offensive glass.

Scoring system is

1 point for a defensive rebound and a dribble to half court in 2 seconds
2 points for an offensive rebound, if they score the offensive rebound, it is another two points
1 bonus point for 3 rebounds in a row

Play to 10 with the same groups on offense and defense until one team wins.

To start the drill, keep the offense stationary, to make the drill more challenging, have the offense move before the assistant coach calls a number.

4 on 4 Line Rebounding Drill

Brandon Bailey

basketball-drills-line-rebounidng

Coach stands on the baseline with a basketball

Coach calls out a number and passes to one of four players on the peflmeter

Which ever number he calls, that number has to closeout and block out on the player with the basketball

(IN THIS FRAME. THE COACH HAS CALLED OUT 1, 50 1 CLOSES OUT AND BLOCKS OUT x2)

The other players have to communicate and block out the other three players

Once the offensive player catches the ball, he shoots

When the ball touches the rim, the play is live

There are no out of bounds, no fouls, and the offense doesn’t have to take the ball out

The team that scores goes to defense

The team with the most points, or is the line at the end of the drill wins

Creighton Switch Rebounding Drill

Scott Miller, Head Boys Basketball Coach, Glenbard East High School (IL)

creighton-switch-rebounding-drill

X passes the ball to the player on the elbow

O catches and shoots the ball

The first X in each line boxes out the player at the opposite elbow

Play two on two until a team scores

Winners stay on the court, keep an overall score to make the drill competitive

1 vs. 2 Rebounding Drill

basketball-drills-rebounding

This is a great drill to get your players to box out on defense and crash and avoid box outs on offense. Too many rebounding drills benefit the taller players and don’t truly reward players for boxing out or getting around box outs, so this drill is perfect to reward pursuit effort.

Coach will shoot the ball. On the flight of the shot, both defenders will sprint to box out the offensive player, while the offensive player will try to get around the block outs and pursue the offensive rebound.

Defenders do not pursue the rebound. Instead, they continue to box out and try to keep the offensive player from touching the rebound before the ball bounces twice. If the rebound bounces twice before the offensive player touches the ball, the defensive team gets one point. If the offensive player touches the ball in the air, the offensive team gets two points. If the offensive player touches the ball after one bounce, the offensive team gets one point. If the offensive player rebounds the ball in the air and finishes a put-back, the offensive team gets three points.

Both teams play offense for two minutes then defense for two minutes. Team with most points at the end of four minutes wins.

Basketball Drills: Get 1, Get 2, Get 3 Rebounding

By Brian Williams on May 6, 2015

This drill is a part of Arkansas Women’s Coach Mike Neigbors competitive drills packet.

He updates and sends out the packet from time to time in his newsletter.

His basketball coaching newsletter is one of the oldest and best around.

If you are interested in joining his distribution list, email me and I will pass your email address along to him.

This drill is used in his college women’s program, but can be tweaked to fit the resources and personnel that you have available in your coaching situation.

Get One, Get Two, Get Three Rebounding Drill

We use our men’s practice team as the offensive rebounder in this drill.

If you don’t have a full team of men’s players, borrow a JV player from them for a drill. Worst case scenario pick your own best offensive rebounder (or two) and incentivize the drill for them somehow.

Line up the rest of your team.

basketball-drills-123rebounding1

The offensive rebounder has a football blocking pad in one hand.

The defender will HIT the pad.

The defensive rebounder must keep the offensive player from re-bounding the miss.

If the offensive player can get the ball with a pad in one hand the defensive player must go again.

We have ten players, so we put 8:00 on the clock.

The entire team must get a rebound versus the offense to complete the GET ONE.

basketball-drills-123rebounding2

After we complete GET ONE, we add a 2nd offensive rebounder. Now your team must GET TWO in a row before we rotate. Again, we go through the entire team.

Then we add a 3rd… Now we must GET 3 in a row to complete the drill.

If we can do that in 8:00 we have done a pretty good job.

Keys to this drill:
1) Create realistic misses
2) Demand HIT/GIT techniques
3) Create atmosphere of toughness

Here is a link to Coach Neighbors HIT/GIT rebounding technique: Hit and “Git” Rebounding

Once you consistently GET THREE, try to GET 4… We have yet to accomplish it in 8:00 but creates a ceiling to shoot for after the GET 3 becomes routine.

Basketball Drills Defending Perfect Movement

By Brian Williams on November 7, 2014

This post contains two videos from Xavier practice with former Coach Chris Mack. The first video is a 5 on 5 defensive drill requiring the defense to play perfectly for 24 seconds. The final video is a two player drill working on help position and closeouts.

Press the play arrow in the middle of each video to see each YouTube video. Make sure that your sound is on as you watch them.

Basketball Drills: Defending Perfect Movement :24

This basketball drill requires players to be in perfect position, communicating with teammates, seeing the basketball, and staying in their defensive stance for 24 seconds. Any breakdowns and the players must start the drill again for a full, consecutive 24 seconds. You can add any fundamentals that you want to the requirements or require that players execute for a longer period of time to win the drill. Make sure that your sound is on and click the play arrow to see the video.

Basketball Drills: 2 on 2 Gap Closeouts

Drill to work on getting in the defensive gap to see both the basketball and the player you are guarding, establishing help side position, and closing out. Make sure that your sound is on and click the play arrow to see the video.
