By Brian Williams on April 16, 2013

Coach Vonn Read has submitted several plays from his playbook series The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays to the Coaching Toolbox.

Vonn has a wealth of Coaching Experience:

NBA: Advanced scout for the Orlando Magic
WNBA Assistant Coach with the Phoenix Mercury, Orlando Miracle, and San Antonio Silver Stars.
Women’s College Assistant: Syracuse, Houston, Memphis

This set is a way to get a shooter open for a 3 point shot.

Basketball Plays

The 1 player passes to the wing and cuts to the opposite wing.

The 2 player will cut to the block.

Basketball Plays

The 4 player will sprint over to the wing to set the ball screen for the 3 player, who will dribble to the middle of the floor.

Basketball Plays

After the ball screen, the 2 player will fake a backscreen for the 5 player.

On the fake backscreen, the X2 defender will hold, as they are a help defender.

This will free the 2 player up as they sprint through the elevator screen.

Coach Read has also put together The Basketball Encyclopedia of plays. You can check them out here: The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays or read more about the books:

Basketball Plays Texas

By Brian Williams on April 9, 2013

This play was sent to me by Coach Brandon Rosenthal.

Coach Rosenthal is currently serving as the assistant basketball coach in charge of video coordination for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs at Santa Clara University.

Prior to moving to Santa Clara, Brandon was an assistant coach at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas.

The play came from the University of Texas.

Basketball Plays

(1) passes to (2) and screens away for (4).

Basketball Plays

(3) sets his man up and receives a down screen from (1).

(2) hits (4).

(3) uses the down screen from (1) and then receives the ball from (4).

Basketball Plays

(4) follows the pass with a sprint screen.

(1) spaces and (5) works for post position.

(3) uses the ball screens and attacks the T, ready to read the defense.

Note: 5 should be shaping up on the block. The diagram is not intended to have the 5 player moving up and getting in the way of 3.

I have posted several other diagrammed plays, animated basketball plays, and videos of basketball plays to run against man to man defense.

Basketball Plays Utes

By Brian Williams on April 1, 2013

This quick hitting play to run against a man to man defense is from the 2011 South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association Fall Clinic.

The notes were assembled by David Preheim and were sent to me by Coach Steve Steve Smiley, current Associate Head Coach for the Men’s Program at Northern Colorado.

The play was presented by Ryun Williams, Head Women’s Coach at The University of South Dakota.

The play has an option for a 3 to take a 4 off the dribble if the ball screen is switched.

Basketball Plays

– 5 down screens for 3 to make a straight cut

– 4 cuts to the low block

Basketball Plays

– 5 sets a decoy cross screen while 1 sets a down screen to free up 4

– This will help take away the ability to hard hedge/trap the ball screen

– 1 spaces out while 3 attacks the lane off of the ball screen

– 1 can kick to 2 if his defender helps on the lane attack

Basketball Plays

– If they switch the ball screen, 3 needs to drag out the screen

Basketball Plays

-3 should look to take the BIG defender off of the dribble

– If X4 sags off, 3 should look to shoot the 3

Basketball Plays 35

By Brian Williams on March 19, 2013

This play is run against man to man defense.

I got it from a Creighton Burns’ newsletter.

If you are interested in receiving his newsletter, contact us and I will put you in touch with Coach Burns.

In his newsleter, Creighton added that for everthing he runs, if the play breaks down, his team immediately begins to run his motion offense.

He calls the play “35” and starts it in a 1-3-1 set.

Basketball Plays

#1 enters the ball to #3, and runs a UCLA rub off the back screen set by #5.

If #1 is open on the cut to the rim, #3 can give him the ball.

Basketball Plays

#5 will step out and set a ball screen for #3.

#3 will drive the ball into the middle of the lane, looking to drive the ball thorugh the nail hole.

#1 and #2 move to set a staggered double back screen for #5.

#3 will look for his shot first, and then to #5 rolling to the rim, utilizing the screens set by #1 and #2.

Basketball Plays

If #3 makes a pass to #4, he will cut away from the ball and fill the backside baseline corner.

#1 and #2 will fill the point and back side wing respectively.

#4 will look to get the ball to #5 who is now posting hard down in the low past area.

Basketball Plays

If nothing is open, #4 will start ball reversal by making a pass to #1 at the point.

#1 will swing the ball on to #2, and then cut down through the middle setting a screen for #5.

#5 will sprint and set another ball screen. This time he is going to ball screen for #2..

#2 will use the screen and drive the ball into the lane, looking first for his shot, and then the pass to #5 rolling to the rim.

As #2 drives the ball, #4 down screens for #1.

If #2 does not have a shot, or a pass to #5, he may hit #1 coming off the screen for a shot.

Basketball Plays

#3 has four options. He may have a scoring opportunity on his penetration, he may feed #5 rolling to the rim, he may hit 1 curling off the down screen, or he may throw back to #3, who has moved up to the back side wing.

If #3 gets the ball, he will look to get the ball down low to #5.

After passing the ball to either #1 or #3 on the wings, #2 will go and ball screen and the three perimeter players would start a three man weave looking to develop a scoring opportunity.
