Unique Sideline Out of Bounds Play

By Brian Williams on October 6, 2025

In the video below Coach Brad Underwood shares a unique Sideline Out of Bounds Play.

Being prepared for every type of situation is critical to your success as a coach.

This play is designed to help you get the ball in play from a sideline inbound situation.

Great to use at the end of the game when the opposition is denying the inbound pass.

The clip is taken from Coach Underwood’s DVD called Winning the Margins: Special Situations and Effort-Based Coaching with Brad Underwood!

Close Out and Rebounding Drill

By Brian Williams on October 6, 2025

In the video below  Coach Grant Leonard from Queens University shares a Close Out and Rebounding Drill.

The set up is quite simple. Two offensive players vs one defensive player. The first offensive player has the ball in the slot and the offensive player is on the opposite wide of the floor. The defensive player is in the gap and must help to stop the middle drive of the first offensive player and then close out with high hands to the shooter on the pass.

On the catch the offensive player may shoot or drive. Play is live until the offensive player scores or the defensive players records a stop.

This is just one of many drills that you can get with Coach Leonard’s DVD. To learn more about that product click the following link Defensive System Mastery – Close Outs, Drills & Ball Screens

By Brian Williams on July 10, 2023

In the clip below Coach Christa Sanford shares a drill she uses called the Klay Thompson Shooting Drill

This drill allows the player to get multiple repetitions and requires that they make shots under pressure.

It’s a nice simple drill that can add variety to your individual workouts.

This drill was taken from Coach Sanford’s complete course.

Shoot or Pass Decision Making Drill

By Brian Williams on June 28, 2023

In the clip below Coach Mike Zeilmann demonstrates a great 2v2 drill that teaches Shoot or Pass decision making.

This is a great way to train your players and in my opinion, is much more effective than 2v0.

The drill teaches decision-making and requires that shots are taken vs live defenders.

This drill simulates common scenarios that play out during games and thus are critical to the development of your players

Three Step Transition Offense Progression

By Brian Williams on June 27, 2023

Coaches often say that they want to play fast.

But to play fast you need a system and you need a plan for how you are going to teach that system.

In the three clips below you will see a transition offense progression used by Arkansas Women’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Neighbors.

Coach Neighbors is a highly respected coach and is known as one of the best offensive minds when it comes to fast-paced basketball.

He uses the following 3 step progression for his transition offense.

Let’s take a look at how he breaks down each of these progressions.

These clips were taken from Coach Neighbors’ complete instructional course. For more information about that course click the following link: Organizing Your System

Here is a  look at how he breaks down each of these progressions.

Dribble Follows Passing Drill

By Brian Williams on March 31, 2023

In the clip below coach Kermit Davis shares a Passing Drill that he calls Dribble Follows

Dribble Follows drill is an amazing drill to use at any time of the year, because it allows us to work on passing and cutting, but you will also have the option to work on post-up game for your guards and wings.

The drill begins with the ball on the wing and another offensive player in the corner. The player with the ball dribbles to the point and the corner man follows and replaces his teammate on the wing.

The player and the top stops , pivots on his inside trailing foot, steps through and passes with his outside hand (left in this video).

After making the pass to the wing the player and the point cuts to the basket.

After receiving the ball on the wing player will sweep and pass to the cutter in the post.

The drill can be used on a dribble from the point to the wing with the opposite wing following the dribble to the point.

It is recommended to have a defender down low with the pad. If you have enough coaches in practice, it is also recommended to add defenders on the entry post-pass.

This clip was taken from a clinic presentation by Coach Davis. For access to the complete presentation click the following link: 5 Great Passing Drills
