Basketball Plays: Flip Return

By Brian Williams on January 8, 2018

These plays are quick hits to run against a man to man defense.

It is from an old Xavier Men’s Basketball Newsletter.

You might not be able to run the entire play, but possibly a few of the cuts, screens, and principles can be applied to what you already run.

There are links to other plays from Xavier newsletters at the bottom of this post

Are You Talking Too Much?

By Brian Williams on January 4, 2018

This video is with PGC Basketball Chad Songy.

You can see more drills and posts from PGC Basketball by visiting their Basketball Blog

You might want to have a manager or assistant coach try this exercise in your practices.

I am not suggesting that we should stop all instruction.

I am suggesting that it is critical to put a lot of thought into how we conduct our practices for maximum improvement and then evaluate what is happening to determine if the way that we run our practices is the absolute best way possible.

At this time of the season as you are cutting back on practice time, I think it is helpful to think about ways to use your time efficiently.

You can talk to players, not in the drill. You can substitute for players to talk to them. You can teach by creating rules in the drill so that mistakes and violating points of emphasis are points for the other team,

2-3 Zone Attack Concepts

By Brian Williams on January 2, 2018

Army Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Zak Boisvert has put together some short clips with some concepts for attacking a 2-3 zone defense.

Coach Boisvert has posted several videos of some of the better schemes he has seen. His YouTube channel is: Zak Boisvert You Tube Channel

He also is also very active on Twitter: @ZakBoisvert

He has an outstanding resource site for coaches. You can access it here: PickandPop.net

The videos are YouTube videos, so please make sure that you are on a network that allows YouTube access.

Knife Drive to Attack a 2-3 Zone

Side Ball Screens to Attack a 2-3 Zone

Iso vs 1-2-2

By Brian Williams on January 1, 2018

This play was in the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

This set overloads a side with a dribble hand off and looks to punch the ball into the paint.

You might not use this in it’s entirety, but maybe can use parts of it in your zone attack system.

1 passes to 4, then follows for a dribble hand off as 2 cuts to ball side corner.

3 seals x5 on weak side.

5 pipe cuts trying to seal x3.

4 dives to the block looking to post x4.

1 looks for 3, 4, or 5 with a defender on their back, then cuts to opposite wing after passing. 3 relocates.

Obviously, you have to teach the players who are sealing to avoid the 3 second count.

Whichever player catches with defender on back, looks for shot then in the shooting windows.

Horns Swing Backdoor

By Brian Williams on December 27, 2017

This backdoor play was contributed by Jusin Scanson to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

Editor’s note from Brian:

You might not be able to run this or any other play that someone else uses exactly as is.

What you can hopefully do is take parts of the play and combine them with other ideas that you use or see.

In my opinion, the value of anything that you see someone else run, online, or at a clinic, is that it will get you to do some sustained and creative thinking about improving what you do.

It is also great fodder for staff discussion so that you get everyone’s minds involved.

The play is designed to clear out the help defense and set up a backdoor cut.

From a horns set, 4 pops out to get a wing catch.

1 cuts through the lane to the weak side corner.

2 starts to cut towards the top of the key as 5 occupies the high post. 3 V cuts to get a catch near the corner.

After 4 passes to 3 in the corner, 4 cuts hard to the opposite corner.

2 cuts to the strong side wing to get a reversal from 3.

5 steps to the top of the key and 1 cuts to the opposite wing.

2 swings the ball to 5 who swings the ball to 1.

3 cuts hard to the high post for an entry from 1.

On the catch, 4 cuts hard back door for a layup or free throws.

Transition & Conversion Drill: Baseball

By Brian Williams on December 26, 2017

This transition and conversion drill is presented by Ashland University women’s coach Robyn Fralick.

The 2016-17 Ashland squad was the first undefeated team in NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball. They finished as National Champions with a 37-0 final record.

There is sound with the video, so please make sure that your sound is on.

The video is hosted on YouTube, so you will need to be on a network that allows you to access that site.

The drill in the video is a 2 n 2 drill for working on their pitch ahead in their transition game after a made basket.

However, the “baseball” or softball concept can be applied to any buildup drills that you do to provide a fresh and competitive way to present your concepts and skills.

The videos are from the Championship Productions You Tube Channel
