Zone Flash and Zone Overload

Today’s post contains two quick hitting plays that you can run against a 2-3 zone defense.

Adjust these sets to fit your players and philosophy and/or take bits and pieces to combine with what you already run.

These plays are from The NCAA Best Zone Plays Playbook assembled by Wes Kosel.

It is combined with the NCAA Best Man to Man Plays as this week’s featured playbook bundle. The playbooks contains 170 basketball plays from 68 different NCAA teams.

Florida Gulf Coast Zone Flash

 

4 moves in to the middle of the zone.

1 dribbles left and passes to 3.

 

 

 

3 passes back to 1 and 4 moves to the right elbow.

1 passes to 4 causing x5 to move up and x3 to dive in front of 5.

 

 

 

5 then pins x3 in.

4 passes to 3 for a shot.

 

 

 

 

As x3 closes out, 5 may be open inside.

 

 

 

 

Farleigh Dickinson Zone Overload Ball Screen

2 runs to the corner and 5 sets a ball-screen for 1.

The idea is to get x2 and x4 shifted towards the ball leaving 2 in the corner for a shot.

Dana Altman Spread Elbow Hand Off

Today’s post contains two quick hitting plays that you can run against man to man defense out of a spread alignment.

Adjust these sets to fit your players and philosophy and/or take bits and pieces to combine with what you already run.

The plays are from The Encyclopedia of the Spread Offense Playbook assembled by Chris Filios.

It is combined with the Best of Special Situations as this week’s featured playbook bundle. The playbook contains 210 basketball plays from 40 different NCAA teams.

You can make adjustments to the fakes, the hand offs, or have 5 keep the ball and drive him or herself.

Dana Altman Spread Elbow Hand Off

Spread set.

1-4 are interchangeable pieces.

1 passes to 2.

5 back screens for 4 to ball side block.

 

4 fills out to corner.

5 sets shuffle screen for 3.

3 curls screen to ball side block.

2 passes to 1.

 

1 passes to 5.

1 cuts off 5.

5 fakes hand off. (If 1 is open, you can make the hand off instead of fake)

3 fills out to corner.

2 and 4 fill up.

2 cuts off 5 for hand off.

If it is not open.

1 fills out to corner.

4 and 3 fill up.

 

Brad Underwood Spread Stagger Curl

1 reverses ball to 4.

4 swings to 3.

5 back screens 1 to ball side block.

 

 

4 and 5 stagger away for 2.

2 curls screen to rim.

1 fills out to corner.

 

 

After 2 curls off screen, 4 pins down for 5 to top for jumper.

Michigan State Ball Screen Flare

1 zipper cuts to the NBA Slot of off 4 and 5.

 

 

 
 

3 inbounds the ball to 1 and makes an Iverson cut off of 5 and 2.

 

 

 
 

2 sets a ball screen for 1, then cuts off a double flare from 4 and 5.

 

 

 

Michigan State Lob

This is a short seconds lob play.

1 breaks out of the stack to the NBA slot

2 cuts to the ball side corner

 
 

4 curls around 4 for possible lob.

4 should shape up and be available to the ball as are 1 and 2.

 

 

Archie Miller Double Rip and Flare Pin Zone Attack

Archie Miller Double Rip

1 dribbles to wing.

2 cuts to wing.

4 screens up.

3 sets cross screen for 5.

 

Archie Miller Flare Pin

 

1 runs a DHO with 2.

4 pins down for 3.

 

 

 

2 passes to 3.

1 comes off pin down from 4.

5 sets flare for 2.

 

 

Michigan & South Carolina Man to Man Plays

Michigan Chin STS (Screen the Screener)

2 comes up to wing.

1 passes to 2 and cuts to corner.

3 and 4 exchange on the weak side.

2 dribbles up just past the top of the key.

 

2 passes to 4.

5 steps up to set back screen for 2.

2 goes off 5’s back screen and loops just under the elbow.

5 pops out to 3 point line. 4 reverses to 5.

 

On 5’s catch 1 runs up to wing.

5 passes to 1.

2 steps up to set back screen for 4.

4 cuts through lane to corner.

5 sets down screen for 2.

After setting backscreen 2 comes off 5’s screen to top of key.

1 passes to 2 for shot or drive

South Carolina STS Iverson

2 cuts over 5 and 4 to the short corner.

3 cuts to the opposite block.

1 passes to 4.

 

 

After the pass 1 comes off a flare screen by 5.

4 passes to 1.

On the pass to 1, 3 sets a cross screen for 2 to the block.

 

 

After setting the cross screen 3 comes off a double screen by 4.

and 5 to the top of the key.

1 passes to 3 for a possible shot.

 

 

After passing to 3, 1 does an Iverson cut off of 4 and 5 to opposite wing.

3 passes to 1.

1 can drive or look to 2 posting up on the block.
