Today’s post is a man to man inbounds play from the Virginia Men’s Program.

The play is from The Best of Special Situations Playbook assembled by Chris Filios

Quick note. It is difficult to get the timing for the play, but obviously, you need to set your own timing so that 2 and 4 are not in the lane for 3 seconds.

You probably won’t be able to use the play “As is” but you might be able to take a few of the actions that make up the play and use them to improve what you already do.

2 curls around 5.

1 passes to 5.

1 cuts off 5 and receives a hand off from 1.

3 pops to the opposite wing.

4 down screens for 2.

2 curls the screen.

1 has the option to hit either 2 or 4 if open.

4 should clear the lane if he/she doesn’t receive a pass from 1.

2 and 5 set a staggered screen for 3.

4 screens for the screener (2)

3 cuts off the staggered screen from 2 and 5

4 steps in to screen for 5.

5 cuts to the basket.

4 dives to the ball.

1 looks to 4 or 5.

Both of these out of bounds plays were contributed by Bert DeSalvo to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

Out-of-bounds plays can be the difference in a close game, especially when they create an immediate scoring opportunity before the defense is set.

The best inbound plays combine solid spacing, sharp timing, and multiple options to keep defenders guessing.

The Kansas out-of-bounds actions below are designed to generate high-quality shots while giving the inbounder clear reads.

Even if you don’t run these plays exactly as shown, the screening actions and player movement can easily be adapted to fit your own system.

Mason throws it over the top to Ellis

Ellis pops for the catch

Selden sets a screen for Mason

Mason curls the screen

Ellis dribbles to the opposite elbow area and dribble hand offs with Mason

Ellis then screens Mason’s defender

Mason turns the corner and attacks the rim

Lucas pins down for Selden

Selden sprints to the 3pt line

Kansas HC SLOB ‘Chop’ Action

The set has multiple options if opponents take one option away.

Mason inbounds to Selden

Mason fades to near is corner

Selden brings the ball to opposite corner and gives Graham a dribble handoff

Lucas lifts and sets a high pick and lets Graham use the pick

Selden steps off to the 3pt line

Graham drags his dribble

Lucas sets a screen for Selden, Selden curls the screen

Graham reverses to Selden

Graham spaces to the 3pt line

Selden drives the ball and attacks the rim

(Also has dump off to Ellis or kick to Mason/Graham for 3pt shot)

A couple of quick hitters against a 2-3 zone defense to consider adding as something that your upcoming opponents haven’t seen you run.

4 Across Screen

4 releases to catch the inbounds pass at the elbow.

 
 
As soon as 4 catches the basketball, 5 sets a wide down screen for 2.

4 dribbles at the cutter for a dribble hand off.

As the hand off takes place, 1 sets a diagonal back screen for 5.

2 is looking for a quick reversal to 3.

The design is to get the ball to 5 at the basket.

You can have 2 and 4 set a staggered screen for 1 to occupy the defense.

This frame is another way to finish the play.

You can run a stagger away for 1.

The idea for the post is for you to motivate you and your staff to dedicate some concentrated thinking to ways to put your players in positions to take advantage of their strengths.

Box Set Staggers

3 pops to the short corner.

The first cutter, 2 curls the staggered down screen from 5 and 4 .

If 2 is not open, he will cut to the wide wing (elbow extended).

After inbounding the ball, 1 comes off a staggered screen from 4 & 5.

The final option is for 3 coming off a third staggered screen.
