2 Villanova Inbounds Plays

By Brian Williams on March 1, 2017

This post contains two inbounds plays from 2016 and 2018 Men’s National Champions Villanova and Coach Jay Wright.

The first play is a baseline inbounds play.

The second is for when you are inbounding the ball from the sideline.

Adjust these sets to fit your players and philosophy and/or take bits and pieces to combine with what you already run.

The plays are from The Best of Special Teams Playbook assembled by Chris Filios.

The playbook contains 210 basketball plays from 40 different NCAA teams.

It is paired with Faces in New Places 2017 as this week’s eBook special.

You can find out more about what is included in the bundle at this link:

Villanova Curl Pin BLOB

3 cuts off a back screen from 1.

4 and 5 set a double staggered screen for 1.

If 1 is not open, he stops and screens with 5 for 4.

You can adjust to have 1 or 4 dive after they screen

Villanova Line SLOB

5 cuts to the ball side block.

2 loops between 4 and 1 to the opposite block.

4 turns and screens for 1.

1 cuts to the ball and receives the inbounds pass from 3.

3 cuts inbounds as soon as the pass is made.

4 receives a rescreen ball screen from 4.

2 spaces to the corner.

Another way to run this would be for 3 to cut in and get a hand back from 5 and then come off of 4s on ball screen.

Basketball Plays: 2 Xavier Under Out Sets

By Brian Williams on August 31, 2015

A couple of quick hitters against a 2-3 zone defense to consider adding as something that your upcoming opponents haven’t seen you run.

These two plays were included in the Xavier Men’s Basketball Coaching Newsletter

4 Across Screen

BLOB1

4 releases to catch the inbounds pass at the elbow.

BLOB2

As soon as 4 catches the basketball, 5 sets a wide down screen for 2.

4 dribbles at the cutter for a dribble hand off.

BLOB3

As the hand off takes place, 1 sets a diagonal back screen for 5.

2 is looking for a quick reversal to 3.

The design is to get the ball to 5 at the basket.

You can have 2 and 4 set a staggered screen for 1 to occupy the defense.

BLOB4

This frame is another way to finish the play.

You can run a stagger away for 1.

The idea for the post is for you to motivate you and your staff to dedicate some concentrated thinking to ways to put your players in positions to take advantage of their strengths.

Box Set Staggers

BLOB5

3 pops to the short corner.

The first cutter, 2 curls the staggered down screen from 5 and 4 .

If 2 is not open, he will cut to the wide wing (elbow extended).

BLOB6

After inbounding the ball, 1 comes off a staggered screen from 4 & 5.

BLOB7

The final option is for 3 coming off a third staggered screen.

End of Game/Qtr Need 3

By Brian Williams on July 20, 2015

These two inbounds plays came from the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

The site has thousands of drills and plays that have been submitted by basketball coaches from around the world.

The first play is an under the basket inbounds play, the second is a side out play.

This is a last second play that can also be used at the end of quarters in high school.

One of our opponents ran this BLOB to perfection against us a couple seasons ago.

We did not defend the action very well and gave up the open shot in the corner to lose by one point.

BLOB

basketball-plays-eog2

1 comes off the triple stack to receive the inbounds pass at the low wing/corner from 3.

basketball-plays-eog3

1 dribbles toward the top of the key while 2 and 5 move to middle of the lane to set staggered screen 3.

As soon as 3 clears 2, 2 curls around 4’s screen to the corner.

1st Option: 1 passes to 3 for the shot near the top of the key, coming off the double staggered screens from 2 and 5.

2nd Option: 1 reverse pivots and passes to 2 in the corner for the shot, coming off the screen from 4.

Wizzards Curl Hammer SLOB

Submitted to FastModel by Kyle Gilreath,

This play that the Washington Wizards ran at the end of Game 4 in the 2015 Playoffs against the Hawks for Paul Pierce is one of my new favorites. It is very simple yet extremely effective as a misdirection.

basketball-plays-eog1

2 (Beal) curled off a stagger from 3 (Pierce) and 1 (Wall).

After receiving the inbounds pass, 2 dribbled to the baseline as 5 set a hammer screen for 3.

Basketball Plays: 21 Zone Baseline Inbounds Plays

By Brian Williams on March 9, 2015

Army Men’s Assistant Coach Zak Boisvert has assembled some of his favorite baseline inbounds plays to run against a 2-3 zone defense.

His YouTube channel has several videos with various types of man-to-man plays, zone sets, and inbounds plays. You can subscribe to receive an update when he posts a new video Zak Boisvert You Tube Channel

You can follow him on Twitter at this link: @ZakBoisvert

Click the play arrow to see the plays.

Some plays are shown more than once.

The teams don’t always score on the plays, but I hope that you can get some ideas for some cuts, screens, and movements that you might be able to use either in your Under out plays against a 2-3 zone, or adapt them to include in your system of attacking a 2-3 zone.

Coach Boisvert has put together a pdf download. You can download it from this link: 21 2-3 Zone Sets Diagrams
