BLOBs

Gut BLOB to Pick and Roll

By Brian Williams on August 15, 2018

Man to man under out inbound play.

My hope for you is that you can take actions and movements from these plays to fit into your system and the abilities of your players.

The play was contributed by Diccon Lloyd-Smeath to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

Diccon Lloyd-Smeath is based in London, England, and currently coaching at Reading Rockets as well as internationally with Basketball Wales and Basketball England’s U15 National Team as a Performance Analyst. He studied for an MSC in Basketball Coaching Science in a course split between the University of Worcester and the Lithuanian Sports University. While delivering team scouting reports for the Worcester Wolves in the BBL during his placement year, and spending time during the summer in Lithuania, Diccon developed a fascination for cutting edge Xs & Os, advanced stats, and elite coaching practice. Now producing basketball analysis and content for the FIBA Basketball Champions League, he is always learning, sharing and talking hoops.

This is what Diccon said about the play:

Nice BLOB from Spain Coach Sergio Scariolo.

Staggered screen to inbound the ball, then “gut cut” (similar to a zipper cut but inside) from 1 through a down screen from 5.

On the catch, 5 and 3 enter Spain PNR.

Tough to guard with lots of movement and screening action.

3 cuts off back screen from 5.

This cut is to loosen 5’s defender more than to score.

5 then turns to set staggered screen with 4 for 2, who curls off to receive pass from 1.

1 makes gut cut up through paint.

5 sets a down screen to help 1 to receive reversal pass from 2.

4 clears out to wing.

On catch, 5 and 3 set screens for Spain PNR.

2 and 4 fill the corners.

5 rolls, 3 pops and 1 makes best decison.

Cincinnati Bearcats – 3 Low BLOB

These guard-to-big and big-to-guard screens will create mismatches when defenses switch or open shots when screen defenders “show” on offensive players receiving screens.

Cincinnati Bearcats – 3 Low BLOB

2 sets a back screen for 4.

5 sets a cross screen for 2.

1 passes to 2 for the shot.

If no shot, 2 passes to 3.

4 sets a down screen for 1.

1 curls or flares for a pass from 3.

Purdue 3 Low Twist Baseline Inbound Play

The play uses both misdirection and guard-to-big screens for an open look inside with this 3 Low OOB from the Purdue Boilermakers.

Purdue Boilermakers – 3 Low Twist to Back Screen BLOB

5 screens for 2 who looks back around to strong side block.

4 spaces to weak side corner.

1 inbounds to 5.

5 hands off to 1 who dribbles toward wing.

1 passes to 3, while 2 sets cross screen for 5.

3 passes to 5.

Triple Baseline Inbound Plays

By Brian Williams on February 26, 2018

Sharing an idea for a baseline inbounds play to run against man to man defense.

Regardless of the inbound play that is being run, the play begins as soon as the inbounder receives the ball from the official.

Slapping the ball, yelling “go,” or using any other way to signal the start of the play wastes time on the five second count.

It is worth mentioning, that just like any inbound play, or any type of play you run, your players must be sound in screening, cutting, passing, catching, and faking for the play to succeed.

The numbers are for identification purposes only.

You do not need players that fit the stereotypical 1 through 5 positions to run the play.

Always inbound the ball to the first open player to minimize the risk of a five second count.

3 screens for 2

4 screens for 3. This is the first screen the screener for this play.

You can have 2 break beyond the 3 point or inside it.

5 screens for 2.

You can have 2 break beyond the 3 point or inside it.

4 screens for 5 and then opens to the ball (or 5 can screen for 4 if you prefer). Second STS for this play.

2 breaks out as safety release.

You can also consider have the player who ends up in front of the ball release to the elbow for your inbounds pass.

I hope you might be able to put one or two of the plays from today’s links to get an extra basket or two in some of your late season or post season games.

The plays were contributed by Coach Matt Wheeler.

The Boston Celtics start this play set up in a staggered screen with 1 & 5 screening for 2 at the free throw line.

2 curls around the first screen from 1 and cuts to the rim.

1 then turns around and cuts off of the screen from 5. 3 looks to pass to 2 at the rim, then 1 off of the screen.

If those options aren’t available, 5 pops up top for a safety option. 4 stays in the corner for spacing.

Celtics Stagger Split

5 & 1 set a stagger screen for 2.

2 curls around the screen from 1 and cuts to the basket.

1 then cuts off of the screen from 5

76ers Dive Stagger Slip

The Philadelphia 76ers used this BLOB play to get a dunk off the inbounds pass in their preseason game against the Boston Celtics. The 76ers were down 7 with under 2 minutes left and needed a quick basket. This play is designed so that x5 has to provide help on 2 consecutive screens. 5 slipped the second screen and was able to get a wide open dunk.

3 cuts off of the screen from 5 to the basket.

3 clears to the corner.

2 curls off the staggered screen from 4 & 5.

4 pops up top after the screen.

5 slips to the basket for a layup.

Quick note. It is difficult to get the timing for the play, but obviously, you need to set your own timing so that 2 and 4 are not in the lane for 3 seconds.

You probably won’t be able to use the play “As is” but you might be able to take a few of the actions that make up the play and use them to improve what you already do.

Diagrams created with FastDraw

2 curls around 5.

1 passes to 5.

1 cuts off 5 and receives a hand off from 1.

3 pops to the opposite wing.

4 down screens for 2.

2 curls the screen.

1 has the option to hit either 2 or 4 if open.

4 should clear the lane if he/she doesn’t receive a pass from 1.

2 and 5 set a staggered screen for 3.

4 screens for the screener (2)
