Basketball Drills

Basketball Drills: Tennessee Rebounding Drills

By Brian Williams on October 23, 2015

These rebounding drills are with former Tennessee’s women’s coach Holly Warlick

These are You Tube videos, so you will need to be able to view You Tube videos on the server you are on. At times schools will block You Tube.

Make sure your sound is on as you watch. Click the play arrow to see the video..

I like the idea of having the rebounding team look to push the ball on offense after securing the rebound to make your rebounding drills more game-like.

If you are interested in learning more about the entire DVD that this sample came from, click this link: Competitive Rebounding, Defense & Transition Drills . Numbers Rebounding Drill

5 offensive rebounders outside the three point arc. They are numbered 1 through 5.

3 defenders with 10 toes in the paint.

Coach calls 3 numbers and those 3 numbers from the perimeter offensive rebounders crash the offensive glass.

Scoring system is

1 point for a defensive rebound and a dribble to half court in 2 seconds
2 points for an offensive rebound, if they score the offensive rebound, it is another two points
1 bonus point for 3 rebounds in a row

Play to 10 with the same groups on offense and defense until one team wins.

To start the drill, keep the offense stationary, to make the drill more challenging, have the offense move before the assistant coach calls a number.

Lane One on One

By Brian Williams on October 9, 2015

This drill called “Lane Line Ball Pressure Drill” and is among the thousands of resources for both coaches and player available from basketballhq. They have several more videos as well as basketball coaching resource articles.

Please make sure your sound is on to see the video.

Click the play arrow so see the drill. The drill is a YouTube video, so you will need to be able to access YouTube to see the drill.

The Coach in the video is Brian Baudinet, currently the Head Men’s Coach at Chatham University.

The drill can be modified to fit your needs so that it becomes your own and used during your fall skill development workouts (where those are available) or can be used in practices this coming season as well. You could change the restricted area, change the scoring, change the length that the dribbler must attain, change the number of seconds the dribbler has, or make any other changes to fit your players and your philosophy.

Like every other drill, the teaching points in the video, or that you use when you run the drill, for both the offense and the defense are what determine the effectiveness of the drills in helping your players improve.

If you have 3 or 4 players in the drill, you can have the winner of each rep stay and the loser goes to the back of the line. You can also make it a ball toughness drill by having a coach or manager be the defender and allowed to use their hands (within reason) or a blocking pad to overload the dribbler.

To score a point in the drill, the defensive player must keep the offensive player from getting to the free throw line, staying with the lane lines, in 4 seconds.

Basketball Drills: Tiger Passing

By on October 6, 2015

This competitive scoring drill came from the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

This drill was contributed by Coach Lason Perkins. He has worked at the high school, college, and semi-pro level for over 20 years.

He has also created over 20 instructional DVDs and 5 books on basketball offenses.

He has built a reputation for being an expert on international offenses and styles of play.

Tiger Passing is a drill that can be used to work on passing, cutting, and being strong with the basketball.

For teams that like to run Open Post offense, it also works on the offensive concepts.

If the setup for the drill does not fit your needs, tweak the version you run so that it does.

“31”

FastTradePreview

Players line up as shown. First player in each line has ball

When coach blows whistle they head to basket and take a choice of shots.

3 pt shot = 3
Inside 3 but outside paint = 2
Layup = 1

They get one shot attempt. If they make it they collect the points for their team.

If they miss they must rebound and get ball to next teammate.

FastTradePreview1

This is a continuous action drill

Our only rule is that your next pass to a teammate must be received on the same side of half court.

In this example, 2’s pass is good. 4’s is illegal and they must go back to opposite side of half before attempting shot at other end.

You could also deduct a point for the infraction.

Drill continues until a team reaches a score of 31
