By Brian Williams on November 11, 2020

This video is with with Jim Larranaga, Quinnipiac University of Miami (FL) Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

He calls it the UCLA Drill.

The purpose of the drill is to make a game-like three point shooting drill.

These are the rules that you can see in the video. You can change, add, adapt, anything you want to the drill to best help your players.

1. Game is played between two competing teams of 4 players each.
2. 4 on 3 on the court with one player from the defensive team off.
3. Offense cannot dribble.
4. All shots are 3 point shots.
5. One point is scored for a made three point basket by the offense.
6. One point is scored for a deflection by the defense.
7. First team to 3 points wins.
8. Once one team gets to 3 points, switch offense to defense and defense to offense.

4 Rip

Instead of waving 4 through to start the offense, 1 hits 3 on the wing and sets a rip screen for 4 to go into the post.

3 throws it into the post to 4 if he is open.

The back end of this play is for 3 to hit 1 (after he sets the rip screen for 4) at the top.

5 then sets and immediate high pick and roll for 1.

As 1 comes off the screen, 4 fills behind and 5 rolls to the rim.

Counter: Rip SBS

1 hits the wing and sets a rip screen for 4.

Instead of going to the post, 4 screens for 3 and they play a 2 man game on the wing.

While this is happening, 1 and 5 are staggering away for 2.

3 on 3 Competitive Shell Drill

By Brian Williams on October 18, 2020

This post was contributed to the FastModel Sports Basketball Plays and Drills Library by Randy Sherman of Radius Athletics.

You can also find out more about FastModel Play Diagramming software by clicking this link: FastDraw

Competitive version of shell drill where a score followed by a stop equals a point and a team must gain three points to win. Drawn 3v3 but can be 4v4 as well. Setup and rules in frame descriptions.

Radius Athletics exists to serve, grow and develop basketball coaches at all levels. How do we do this? Simple.

Pillars of Radius Athletics

Move coaches towards simple, seamless basketball characterized by conceptual offense, transition flow and a defensive approach befitting the modern game

Promote a practice philosophy in line with Growth Mindset and Motor Learning

An “Essentialist” approach to creating a program identity

Modernization of the professional development model for basketball coaches

Setup: drill begins with three offensive players competing against three defensive players at the three quarter court level.

Once the ball is crossed over half court the offense runs the guided shell action of the day. Examples:

Pass, Cut, Fill (shown)

Pass & Screen Away

Pass, Follow, Ball Screen

The teams compete until a shot is taken. If offense scores, the offense and defense switch roles. In order for the basket to count the offensive team that is now on defense, must get a stop to accompany their basket.

A basket followed by a stop counts as one point.

The drill is played until the first team scores three points – three baskets accompanied by three stops.

Advance this drill to 4v4 as well
