Basketball Plays Japan Double Rip

By Brian Williams on September 2, 2013

This play was in the Fast Model Plays and drills library

The play was posted by Coach Lason Perkins.

He saw it while watching Japan play in the FIBA Asia Championships.

I have also included more links to other diagrams of plays at the bottom of this post.

Coach Perkins has worked at the high school, college, and semi-pro level for over 20 years.

He is currently the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Cary Academy in North Carolina.

He has created over 20 instructional videos and 5 books on basketball offenses.

He has built a reputation for being an expert on international offenses and styles of play.

Basketball Drills

#1 dribbles to the side as #2 back picks #5.

#2 continues over and screens for #4.

#1 reverses to #4.

Basketball Drills

On the reversal pass #3 and #2 set a double cross screen for #5.

#4 dribbles to get passing angle for post feed.

Basketball Drills

#3 clears as #4 screens for #2 coming to the top

Basketball Plays Chin Set

By Brian Williams on August 26, 2013

These diagrams came from one of Creighton Burns’ newsletters.

This is an offense that John Beilein has used over the years of his coaching career.

Coach Burns gave Jamie Angeli credit for sharing this set.

Start in 2 – 3 set. There are 3 different ways to get into this set.

Basketball Plays

Guard to Center Pass – #1 passes to #5
#1 and #2 then both cut hard to the basket.
If #5 can pass to either #1 or #2, he passes to them for a backdoor lay-up.
#3 and #4 come out to replace #1 and #2.
If the backdoor is not open, #5 passes to #3 or #4.

Basketball Plays

After #5 passes to #3.
#3 passes to #4.
#4 reverses to #2.
#3 then rubs off #5 on a hard cut to the basket.
#2 passes to #3 for the lay-up.

Basketball Plays

If #3 is not open:
After #4 reverses to #2, #4 v-cuts towards the basket and then pops back out.
#5 banana cuts to screen #4’s defender.
#2 passes to #4 after he pops back.
#4 shoots the 3-pointer or drives hard off #5’s screen for the lay-up.

Basketball Plays

If #4 is cut off by his defender, #4 passes to #1 for a 3-pointer.
If #1 is not open for a shot, he dribbles high.
#2 comes high on the left side.
#3 moves up to the left wing.
#4 after passing goes to the corner and then moves up to the right wing.

#5 moves toward the middle of the free throw line.

Basketball Plays

Now the same pattern is run on the right side of the floor.

#1 passes to #4.
#2 rubs cuts off #5 and cuts hard to the basket.
#4 passes to #2 for the lay-up.

Basketball Plays

If #2 is not open:
After #1 passes to #4, he v-cuts towards the basket and then pops back out.
#5 banana cuts to screen #1’s defender.
#1 shoots the 3-pointer or drives hard off 5’s screen for the lay-up.

Basketball Plays

If #1 is cut off by his defender, #1 passes to #3 for the 3-pointer.
If #3 is not open for a shot, he dribbles high.
#4 comes high on the right side.
#2 moves up to the right wing.
#1 after passing goes to the corner and then moves up to the left wing.

#5 moves toward the middle of the free throw line.

The same pattern now starts on the left side.

Basketball Plays Mid Post Punch

By Brian Williams on August 12, 2013

Coach Vonn Read has submitted several plays from his playbook series The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays to the Coaching Toolbox. Vonn is currently serving as an assistant Women’s Coach at Houston.

He has also served as an assistant coach in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, Orlando Miracle, and San Antonio Silver Stars. He was an advanced scout for the Orlando Magic as well as The Charlotte Sting.

This play is a quick hitter to run against a 2-3 zone.

1 Passes to the 3 Player on the wing.

The offense will quickly swing the ball around the perimeter to the 2 player to get the Zone moving.

The 2 player will pass to the 5 player in the Mid Post.

The 4 player will cut baseline for the backdoor pass from the 5 player.

X3 would have to cut all the way to the basket to stop the pass.

X3 is usually caught staring at the ball when passed to the 5 player.

X3 or X4 would have to help on the pass to the 4 player, leaving the 2 player open sliding to the corner or the 3 player open on the wing.

Coach Read has also put together The Basketball Encyclopedia of plays. You can check them out here: The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays or read more about the books:

Any coach looking for the latest and innovative plays from the Professional, College, or High School levels can stop looking. With a compilation of over 7,700 different plays, you will never need to purchase another basketball playbook again. These playbooks can be used as a great reference tool for years to come. This 2 Volume Book includes plays from 19 different play categories, and they are the most extensive playbooks on the market.

The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays (Platinum Series) contains over 7,700 Plays (Both Volumes combined) from the NBA, WNBA, USBL, and College levels from someone who has worked as an Advanced Scout or Coach on each level!!! This book has been intensely compiled over the last 21 years, with plays taken from a lot of NBA Coaches (past and present), WNBA coaches, and College coaches (Men’s and Women’s) from around the country.

Any coach that is serious about improving their knowledge of the game from an X and O standpoint will benefit tremendously from these books. These Books can be used to discover New Quick hitters, add a New Package to your playbook, or develop an entire Offensive System. There are a lot of new ideas and concepts in these books to study, and the Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays can be a great resource for coaches on all levels!!! This book is definitely for those X and O junkies who are always looking to improve as a Coach.

#2 will look for #4 rolling to the rim off the double screen , or he can feed #1 on the wing.
