Basketball Plays Strong 4/5 vs. Post Trap

By Brian Williams on June 18, 2014

This play is a play to run when a team traps the low post from their other big.

Syracuse Women’s Associate Head Coach Vonn Read has submitted several plays from his playbook series The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays to the Coaching Toolbox.

Coach Read has also served as an assistant coach in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury, Orlando Miracle, and San Antonio Silver Stars. He was an advanced scout for the Orlando Magic as well as The Charlotte Sting.

This is a great concept when teams are trapping the post with the opposite post player!!

Diagrams created with FastDraw

Editor’s Note from Brian: I do realize that most teams will not as a defensive rule, trap the post from the elbow. However, if you the defense traps big to big from block to block, moving the second post to the elbow can do one of two things:

1) It takes away that trap and allows a strong low post a chance to go one on one without being trapped–at least until the defense adjusts.

2) Players will usually react as they have been coached. You might get the elbow defender to react once or twice and trap the low post (before his or her coach can adjust) and get a layup from this set.

It could also be used as a backdoor play for teams that don’t swarm the post from that spot and play very aggressive style of defense.

basketball-plays1

The 3 player will pop out to the wing for the pass, and the 2 player will cut to the corner for the overload.

The 4 player will relocate to the weak side elbow.

basketball-plays2

The 3 player will pass the ball to the 5 player.

We run this set because we know the 4 defender will double team the post immediately on the catch.

basketball-plays3

We put the 4 player at the elbow in position to dive the basket if X4 traps the post.

We overload the strong side to take away the help.

There are no defenders on the weak side of the floor to help X4 when they trap the post.

We get layups on this set alot. It can also force the opponent out of this scheme or continue to give up layups.

Coach Read has also put together The Basketball Encyclopedia of plays. You can check them out here: The Basketball Encyclopedia of Plays or read more about the books:
