Basketball Drills Handling Defensive Pressure

Basketball Drills Handling Defensive Pressure

By Brian Williams on December 31, 2013

This sample video features former Division I Head Coach Will Rey teaching a drill to work on handling defensive pressure.

The video segment is almost five minutes long and the drill starts at about 3:00.

The first 3 minutes are some ideas about individual development and some teaching points for drill.

One note, when he says “break the glass on the pass,” he is referring to the passer getting his hand by the defense
when making the pass.

Make sure your speakers are on to see and hear the YouTube video. Please make sure that you are on a server that allows YouTube access.

Basketball Plays Backdoor Plays

By Brian Williams on December 30, 2013

St. Louis Men’s Basketball Coach Zak Boisvert has put together some short clips of 7 backdoor plays. Each play is shown at least twice and a couple of them have two variations.

The point is not a “highlight” tape, but the movements to get shots.

Several of the teams miss the shots in the video of the set they are running.

Also, some of the clips are a few years old. The idea is if the actions have merit and you can incorporate a few in your offensive attack, or it gets you to think about ways you can get a couple of backdoor baskets per game, I believe it is worth the time to watch.

Coach Boisvert has posted several videos of some of the better schemes he has seen. His YouTube channel is: Zac Boisvert YouTube Channel. If you are interested in subscribing.

Here are 7 different man to man backdoor plays. Most are shown more than once. Some have sound and some do not. I hope you can find one or two that fit your basketball program.

Trap Transition

basketball-drills-shaka-smart1

Trap Transition is a drill that forces your offense to get open under pressure and teaches your defenders who to anticipate the first pass out of a trap.

A Guard starts with the ball in the trap and they have to hold it for 2 seconds, then they can pass it out. From their it is live, the defense must sprint back in transition while trying to intercept the ball.

x1 is interceptor side

x3 is interceptor high

x5 is the goaltender

Triangle FastBreak

basketball-drills-shaka-smart2

Occasionally while pressing the defense gets overaggressive and the trap breaks down and the ball gets ahead creating a 5 on 3 situation. This is the perfect drill to teach your players to never give up on a play and to sprint back trying to get a back tip in transition.

1 starts with the ball

x1 and x2 chase to backtip

1 cannot pass until they gets to half court

Once they throw it ahead it is 4 on 4 live

444

basketball-drills-shaka-smart3

444 Is a great defensive drill that involves your entire team. It forces the offensive and defensive teams to stay focused as soon as there is a make/miss or turnover/steal to jump right into your defense and try to create HAVOC.

Three Teams of 4. If the offensive team scores they get to keep the ball and must inbound it again. The defense continues to press until half court, looking to get a steal to score. Once the offensive team reaches half-court the defensive team on the other end picks them up. If the defense gets a stop they become the new offensive team and the new defense can try to get a steal before halfcourt.

Score this like a regular game and go for a specified amount of time.

The 4 player will pop out to the corner for the ball.

The 3 player will cut to the opposite wing.

The 2 player will pop back for the pass from 4.

The 5 player will step out and screen the forward in the Zone, with the 4 player flashing into the middle of the paint.

The X4 defender will usually fight over the screen, which sets up the play for the shooter.

The 2 player will dribble to the key area to drag the Zone.

The 5 player will re-screen the X4 defender with the 1 player coming off the screen for the shot on the wing.

The 2 player can also pass it to the 4 player in the paint, which can result in a High Low Pass to the 5 player for the layup.

If the shot is not available for the 1 player, you can pass it to the high post or short corner.
