Zipper to Overload Zone Attack

By Brian Williams on November 8, 2019

This quick hitting play is from an old Xavier University Basketball Coaching Newsletter.

You can access their archvie at this link: Xavier Men’s Basketball Newsletter

Run this against a 2-3 zone as an entry into your zone attack., or as a set play to get the ball inside.

The post is not intended to say that all programs should run this play as is.

But, hopefully it sparks some ideas for either incorporating a few of these movements (or a tweak that you make to them) into what you already do.

Practicing Pick and Roll Coverage

By Brian Williams on November 4, 2019

Here is a drill that 2019 Missouri Valley Coach of the Year Darian DeVries uses to work on his ball screen defense.

Coach DeVries led the Drake Men’s team to the 2019 Regular season Championship in the MVC.

In the video, they are working on going under ball screens.

You can change angles and spots on the floor to get a lot of fundamental repetition on your ball screen coverages.

The video is hosted on You Tube.

Nuggets Defense Drill

By Brian Williams on October 27, 2019

Tad Boyle (Colorado) puts some demonstration players through a drill that he got from Mike Malone.

The drill works on one team’s 4 on 5 halfcourt defensive rotations while the other squad has to convert to defense after they shoot.

There are several modifications that you can make to the drill to work on areas where you need to improve or to offset talent discrepancies between your first and second units.

Some ideas for tweaks to the drill are:

1) Allow offense to dribble in phase 1
2) Assign the 4 defenders to an individual matchup and leave one offensive player unguarded. That way you can work on help rules. If you leave a perimeter player unguarded, you can work on help and recover. If you leave a shooter unguarded, you can work on awareness and hedging.
3) Instead of having 1 player all the way back, you can have 2 offensive players back to make the defensive conversion even more challenging. You can put them in the corners instead of one under the basket. Then, to avoid playing 6 on 5, you can have one of the 2 who were back to step off once it becomes half court play.
