Basketball Plays: 4 out 1 in

By Brian Williams on May 7, 2015

These 2 4 around 1 quick hitters are among the Swing Offense quick hitters included in Trey Watt’s eBook on the “Versatile Swing Offense.”

You can use them from a 4 around 1 look regardless of what offensive system you use.

This week’s featured eBook bundle is Trey Watts’ Versatile Swing Offense combined with Scott Peterman’s Zone Offense and Defense notes eBook.

Basketball Drills: Get 1, Get 2, Get 3 Rebounding

By Brian Williams on May 6, 2015

This drill is a part of Arkansas Women’s Coach Mike Neigbors competitive drills packet.

He updates and sends out the packet from time to time in his newsletter.

His basketball coaching newsletter is one of the oldest and best around.

If you are interested in joining his distribution list, email me and I will pass your email address along to him.

This drill is used in his college women’s program, but can be tweaked to fit the resources and personnel that you have available in your coaching situation.

Get One, Get Two, Get Three Rebounding Drill

We use our men’s practice team as the offensive rebounder in this drill.

If you don’t have a full team of men’s players, borrow a JV player from them for a drill. Worst case scenario pick your own best offensive rebounder (or two) and incentivize the drill for them somehow.

Line up the rest of your team.

basketball-drills-123rebounding1

The offensive rebounder has a football blocking pad in one hand.

The defender will HIT the pad.

The defensive rebounder must keep the offensive player from re-bounding the miss.

If the offensive player can get the ball with a pad in one hand the defensive player must go again.

We have ten players, so we put 8:00 on the clock.

The entire team must get a rebound versus the offense to complete the GET ONE.

basketball-drills-123rebounding2

After we complete GET ONE, we add a 2nd offensive rebounder. Now your team must GET TWO in a row before we rotate. Again, we go through the entire team.

Then we add a 3rd… Now we must GET 3 in a row to complete the drill.

If we can do that in 8:00 we have done a pretty good job.

Keys to this drill:
1) Create realistic misses
2) Demand HIT/GIT techniques
3) Create atmosphere of toughness

Here is a link to Coach Neighbors HIT/GIT rebounding technique: Hit and “Git” Rebounding

Once you consistently GET THREE, try to GET 4… We have yet to accomplish it in 8:00 but creates a ceiling to shoot for after the GET 3 becomes routine.

13 Ways to Build Culture

By Brian Williams on May 5, 2015

These two lists were written by Alan Stein of Pure Sweat Basketball

Alan is the Basketball Performance Coach at DeMatha High School.

I hope this gives you an idea or two that you can add to what you do or just a different way to present your program’s values to your fellow coaches and to the players.

13 Ways to Build Culture

Successful programs have created a palpable culture, sound habits and high standards:

  1. Program > Team > Player
  2. Players and coaches talk to each other, not at each other. Big difference.
  3. No one is perfect. Mistakes will happen on and off the court. Learn from them.
  4. Every player and every coach is important to the team and plays a role. Respect that.
  5. Focus on effort and attitude. Those are the only 2 things we have complete control over.
  6. You either accept it or you correct it. There is nothing in between.
  7. Repetition is not viewed as punishment. Repetition is necessary to development.
  8. Confront issues, not people.
  9. Goals match behaviors and habits.
  10. Be on time. It is a sign of respect.
  11. Discipline = Love
  12. If you aren’t prepared to put the team first… don’t play.
  13. Believe or leave…

Being a part of program is not a part time endeavor. It’s something you get to pick and choose. You belong to and represent your program 24-7-365. Act accordingly.

12 Keys to a Winning Program

Please note, when I say winning program – I not referring to W’s & L’s exclusively.

I am referring to a winning culture, developing winning habits and setting winning standards.

Winning is all about commitment.

Every player and every coach must be committed to…

  1. Academic work. Aim for success in everything you do, not just the stuff you want to do.
  2. Behavior. Carry yourself in a first class manner at all times. Be respectful.
  3. Character. Doing the right thing all of the time (not just when someone is watching you).
  4. The program. No player is bigger than the team and no team is bigger than the program.
  5. Working hard. There is never an excuse to let someone outwork you. Never.
  6. Working smart. Work out with efficiency & purpose. Learn how to play the right way.
  7. Working consistently. Anyone can be good for a day. Work hard/smart every
  8. Unselfishness. Be a servant leader. Put other’s needs first.
  9. A winning attitude. Earn confidence through effort and demonstrated performance.
  10. The team. Commit to your team’s philosophy and system of play.
  11. Your role. Know it. Embrace it. Take pride it. Fulfill it to the best of your ability.
  12. Your teammates and coaches. They are your brothers/sisters. You are a family.

Wheel

basketball-plays-wheel1

This play is a great play to get a shot for your best wing shooter.

Lots of cuts and you pass to your best shooter to start the play.

basketball-plays-wheel2

3 dribbles to the top and looks for 2 cutting backdoor.

2 fills the strong side corner if he doesn’t receive the backdoor pass.

3 continues dribbling across the top.

basketball-plays-wheel3

4 cuts backdoor on the dribble at by 3 and then posts up and fills the corner.

The 1 fills the spot left by 4.

As the 4 cuts backdoor, the 5 is sprinting to get an angle for the flare screen for the 3.

basketball-plays-wheel4

From this pass and flare action, the 1 will get an angle for the 3 on the flare

This opens up a shot for the three pointer or a drive and kick for the 2.
