OVERVIEW

This clip breaks down a basketball team’s inbounds/BLOB (baseline out-of-bounds) package, all built off a “Two” set with variations layered on top. The staggered screen phase involves two screeners popping to the corner for the primary shooter, with an emphasis on aggressive hand-chops to create separation off the screen.

TWO UP (BASE ACTION)

  • Even alignment with the backboard for the inbounder’s target, deep enough to be inbounds on a baseline ear pass, but positioned to avoid backboard interference on the catch-and-shoot.
  • Five-man on the block, four-man and best shooter stagger off screens to the corner.
  • Screener on top is coached to chop down hard on the defender’s hand/arm to spring the shooter off the stagger.

TWO BLIND (BACK DOOR COUNTER)

  • Used when the defense denies the corner shooter tightly after seeing “Two Up.”
  • All back-door actions are labeled “Blind.”
  • Shooter back-cuts to the rim instead of curling to the corner; action flows into a “zoom” (screen + handoff) with the second screener lifting for a catch, using his shooting gravity to open the rim.
  • Variation shown: corner defender helps down, ball gets zipped to the corner shooter (Kobe Barnes), who can’t get the shot off but drives and kicks for an open three.

TWO CHARLIE (CURL ACTION)

  • All curl actions are called “Charlie.”
  • If the curling shooter isn’t open, the team again flows into zoom/hand-off action, working into the paint.
  • Coach notes zoom is most effective as a secondary action (i.e., running it off the second screener rather than the first).

TWO CHARLIE CHECK (SLIP OFF THE CURL)

  • Any slip action is labeled a “Check.”
  • Used late in the shot clock (shown with 8 seconds left) — the curl screener slips immediately to the rim instead of setting the screen, exploiting the switch.
  • Produces a quick, easy finish at the rim; effective as a “get out of jail” option vs. minimal shot clock.

TWO DAGGER (SCREEN-THE-SCREENER / ATO)

  • Any “screen behind the action” is called a “Dagger.”
  • After the initial shooter comes off screens without a look, the team hands to the five and runs a second screen behind that action.
  • This was specifically drawn up and used as an after-timeout (ATO) play.

COACHING TAKEAWAYS

  • Consistent terminology system: Blind = back door, Charlie = curl, Check = slip, Dagger = screen-behind-the-screen. This vocabulary lets the staff layer multiple reads off one base set without needing separate play calls.
  • Action is designed to be read live based on how the defense guards the initial and secondary screens (chase, deny, switch), with zoom/hand-off serving as the team’s go-to counter throughout the game.
  • Personnel matters: best inbounder, best shooter, and roles for the 4/5 men are specifically assigned within the set.
