DRILL OVERVIEW

This transcript breaks down “10 in a Row,” a fast-break conditioning and transition drill named for the number of players on the roster — each group must complete that many made layups in a row before earning a break. It’s designed to reinforce pace, spacing, and transition decision-making with zero tolerance for sloppy execution.

HOW THE DRILL WORKS

Starting at the free throw line, the ball-handler pushes the ball with two dribbles, jump stops at the top of the key, and hits a cutter running the lane for a layup. Immediately after passing, that player sprints to grab the ball out of the net to reset the drill and become the next outlet target.

KEY TEACHING POINTS

  • Spacing: The receiving player must get to free-throw-line-extended (not below it, ideally wide) so there’s room to push the ball in transition.
  • Outlet discipline: Players never receive or make outlet passes from directly under the backboard — getting stuck there in a game is described as one of the worst-case scenarios, especially late in a close game.
  • Eyes up / half-court simulation: A player stationed at half court simulates a game look, training the outlet receiver to catch the ball with their back to the end line, pivot, and immediately scan ahead rather than dribble it out passively.
  • Big man rule: If a big rebounds and no one is ahead in transition, the coach wants them to push the ball themselves and go coast to coast rather than wait for help.
  • One continuous motion: Catch, pivot, and advance — no hesitation, no standing still after the rebound.
  • Drill runs on both the right and left sides of the floor to build the habit in both directions.

ACCOUNTABILITY STANDARD

If two layups are missed in a single rep (sometimes even one, especially early season), the whole group runs as a conditioning consequence, and the count resets to zero. The coach frames this as upholding a competitive standard — missing point-blank layups with no defense present isn’t acceptable for a top program — while also using the drill as a built-in conditioning tool heading into the season.

WHY IT MATTERS

The coach emphasizes that daily repetition of these habits (grab-and-go outlets, wide spacing, eyes up) builds instinctive transition play that shows up in games — including training players to instinctively avoid getting trapped behind the backboard, a mistake that’s costly when it happens in a real game.
