Sheridan College Generals Basketball

A couple of Days ago, I published Coach Steve Smiley’s Perimeter workout. Here is his post workout:

Post Skill Development Workout

POST WARM-UP (Approximately one minute on each of these, SIT INTO YOUR GAME)

Two Ball Dribbling Sequence + Shelton Drills

Dribbling and Juggling

Take Infield with tennis ball (Low and wide, toes to the outside, SIT INTO YOUR GAME)

Imaginary Defense (Talk your defense, yell it out)

Moving without the ball (Work independently or work in pairs with another post or perimeter)

Break Package Sprints (To the rim for crunch)

Crab Dribbles

Shooting Progression

Groove your go to hooks

Mikan Sequence at one basket or Full Court Mikans

REMEMBER

Keep it straight, Aim for the BACK HALF OF THE BASKET

Get it up. Top of the shot; top of the board (WE WANT A CONSISTENT ARC ON EACH SHOT)

Hold a one second high follow through

Land six inches closer on your shot

Use a feeder, tossback, spin yourself a pass, or flip yourself a pass.

Chin all receptions. Slow down, hold your seal, vary your rhythm. Be quick without hurrying.

The pass will lead you to a shot if you have angles. If played behind, quarter turn on passes to your shoulder.

If played behind and the pass is at your face, chin the ball and look to the middle for diver or double team

GET YOUR EYES ON THE TARGET

Be low and wide on catch, be lower and WIDER on your move. Heel to toe on your move.

Try to get to the front of the rim on your middle move.

GUIDELINES

All lay-ups must be clean to be a make

Put back all misses but they do not count as makes.

Use free throw swish rules in counting your free throws.

Swish = +1             Make Hitting Rim = 0           Miss = -1

4. If you have trouble with a move, break it down and spend extra time on just that move e.g. REPETITIONS TO AD NAUSEAM

5. BE A SKILL PLAYER NOT A DRILL PLAYER.

6. The technique and proper and quick execution at games speeds is what we care about.

7. Periodically check your heart rate with a ten second count and multiply by six.

220 – Age = Maximum Heart Rate Get to 90% of maximum heart rate e.g. 180+

HUTCH’S POST WORKOUT

This should take 30 minutes and you have to MAKE ALL THE SHOTS before going to the next sequence.

You should do this workout every day and shorten it for game warm-ups.

PROPER AND QUICK REPETITION OF EACH MOVE GOING 100% IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS.

MOST SHOTS ARE TAKEN FROM YOUR FAVORITE SIDE OF THE BASKET.

If you want to work from your non-favorite side, that is fine, but you MUST WORK from your favorite side.

1. Four baseline power moves from your favorite side
2. Four jump hooks to middle of the lane from your favorite side
3. Four turnaround jump shots, pivoting on your baseline foot, from your favorite side
4. Four turnaround jump shots with a shot fake, go to hook to the middle of the floor from your favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

5. Four flash to the free throw line for a jump shot from your favorite side
6. Four flash to the free throw line for a jump shot from your non-favorite side
7. Four step out to the short corner for a jump shot from your favorite side
8. Four step out to the short corner for a jump shot from your non-favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

9. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your favorite side
10. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your non-favorite side
11. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your favorite side
12. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your non-favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

13. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your favorite side
14. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your non-favorite side
15. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your favorite side
16. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your non-favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

IF YOU FEEL THAT A SEGMENT OR A MOVE IS NOT UP TO YOUR STANDARDS, ISOLATE THAT MOVE WITH MANY REPETITIONS SO YOU CAN PROPERLY EXECUTE AND FEEL THE MOVE.

YOU WILL WANT TO DO EXTRA WORK ON YOUR GO TO MOVE OUTSIDE OF HUTCH’S WORKOUT

MAKE FIVE IN A ROW; PUTBACKS COUNT

Player will shoot five jump shots from the free throw line or either of the baseline step out areas.

If he makes the shot the ball can hit the floor, but if he misses it he must rebound the ball before it hits the floor.

The putback must be clean to count as a make.

If you miss and the ball hits the floor the player must start over from the beginning.

Do this workout from all three areas once a day. Add the shot fake if you want extra work or just mix it in randomly.

ENDING WORK-OUT

You can choose to end with two five pound weight plates and do one minute segments of

a. Imaginary defense

b. Moving without the ball

c. Break package sprints

YOU CAN’T DO ALL THE DRILLS EACH DAY BUT YOU CAN DO ALL THE SKILLS

BE A PRACTICE PLAYER FIRST. PROPERLY AND QUICKLY EXECUTE THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE GAME FOR THE WELFARE OF THE TEAM

PRACTICE AND PLAY WITH THE INTENSITY AND POISE OF A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM

MAKE SURE YOU STRETCH AFTER YOUR WORKOUT IS COMPLETED

Words of wisdom for point guards (presented by Steve Nash at the Nike Point Guard Academy

“You should always want your coach to be critical. It gives you an opportunity to learn and to overcome adversity.”

“You maximize your potential by being humble develop a work ethic, strive to be a good person, and to be the best teammate you can be.”

“Use your scoring ability to be a better passer, and your passing skills to become a better scorer.”

“You can’t be a point guard who gets into the lane and always passes. Capitalize on the real estate you have gained.”

“Point Guard must be able to pass with both hands equally off the dribble.”

‘”I am always thinking how can I get myself better.”

“On the fast break, after 2 or 3 hard dribbles you should see the whole floor and know where all your teammates are.”

These ideas from Steve Nash were sent to me by Coach Eric Musselman

The Coaching Toolbox has hundreds of resources for basketball coaching including basketball practice, basketball plays, basketball drills, basketball quotes, basketball workouts, basketball poems, and more!

During Tuesday evening’s HoopClinics webinar with Coach Bob Hurley, he gave us a lot of great information. One of the things he said that resonated with me was the idea of validating drills. He said that he picked it up from Coach Vance Walberg of Dribble Drive Motion fame.

Consider telling your team at the beginning of some of the competitive drills that you run that at the end they will need to “validate” it. For example, if you split your team into two groups and do a competitive shooting drill, the team that wins the drill must then make a free throw (coach chooses the player to shoot so that all players have a chance to shoot the free throw eventually) to validate their win.

If the player makes the free throw, the team that lost the drill must run. If the player misses the free throw, then the team that won the drill must run.

It is a good way to shoot some pressure free throws and to teach that for most of the games you win, you have to close them by making free throws.

We have posted the audio recording of the webinar for those of you who couldn’t make it or would like to hear it again.

This drill simulates pressure free throws at the end of a game and emphasizes the damage done by missing free throws late in a close game.

Run the drill at the end of practice to more closely simulate the mental and physical fatigue form the end of a game.

Line up the team in the lane spaces and behind the arc as they would for a free throw attempt. The shooter gets a 1-1 opportunity. Put a realistic score on the scoreboard that you would have in the final minutes of a close tournament game.

We put the score on the scoreboard at 45-44 for high school varsity with our team leading by one. If the shooter makes the shot, your team gets one point added. If the shooter misses, the opponent gets two points added. That emphasized the importance of each miss. After one shooter is done, rotate until each player has had a chance to shoot.

If you win the game, practice ends on a positive note. If you lose, there needs to be a penalty such as

running, frozen push ups, or whatever you want to use.

Some adjustments you can make to make the game more challenging are:

If the first shot of the one and one is missed, count it as two misses since the player does not even get the second shot. That would be 4 points for the imaginary opponent.

Start off with the score tied rather than you being ahead. I think that takes away from the protecting the lead theme, but if you obviously are going to get fouled with a tie game at times, especially if you attack the basket.

Start out behind by a few points to emphasize attacking the basket late in the game to get fouled and catch up with the clock stopped.

Run sprints prior to or between the free throw attempts

Some adjustments you can make to adapt this drill to make it competitive but realistic for younger level teams:

Start out with a bigger lead

Shoot two shots rather than a one and one each time

Each miss is only one point for the imaginary opponent

The idea for this post was from a story in the Indianapolis Star about how the Butler Men’s team runs this drill

The Coaching Toolbox has hundreds of resources for basketball coaching including basketball practice, basketball plays, basketball drills, basketball quotes, basketball workouts, basketball poems, and more!

Growing up and playing high school basketball in the state of Indiana, then becoming a high school basketball coach, I know how all of the young players grow up dreaming of being Miss or Mr. Basketball. Only one player of each gender is awarded that title each year that goes along with recognition by the state coaches and media that he or she is the best player in our state. No one ever achieves that honor without years and years of hard work leading up to that senior season. It takes several hours of working to perfect your basketball skills through repetitions of basketball drills.

April McDivitt Foster lived that dream during the 1998-99 season as she was selected “Miss Basketball” .She then headed to Knoxville to play for the Lady Vols before finishing her playing career in the WNBA. All of the lessons she learned and hours and hours of practice, both practicing basketball skills individually, and practicing basketball drills with her teams, have made her a great resource for ideas to improve the individual aspects of any player’s game, of any gender, and any level of competition.

HoopClinics has scheduled an interactive webinar with her for Monday January 26 at 9:00 EST. For more information on the event, check out this link:

I recently watched on of the best individual basketball skills training DVDs that I have ever seen. The DVD is entitled “Mandatory Moves” and it features Coach Ed Schilling working with three younger high school players on individual scoring moves from four separate areas on the floor. The DVD has a lot of great information that players (regardless of their age or level of competition) can use to improve their games immediately.

For coaches, Coach Schilling breaks down the “Mandatory Moves,” how to teach them, when to apply them, and it shows Coach Schilling re-teaching and emphasizing the specific teaching points that allow these players to show some improvement during the drills.

I believe that better players and not just better plays is what leads to offensive success in basketball. If you are in agreement with that, then you should take a look at Coach Schilling’s DVD “Mandatory Moves.”

I first saw Ed Schilling play when I competed against him in a high school varsity basketball game. Even though he did not score much, he controlled the game as the point guard for the Lebanon (Indiana) Tigers. He got all of his teammates the ball where they were most effective with it, hit the big shots, and made his free throws down the stretch as we were fouling in an attempt to catch up.

That was 25 years ago and since then he had a great career as a player at Miami (Ohio), became a head high school coach at age 23, became an assistant at: UMass, the New Jersey Nets, Memphis, and the head coach at Wright State. Now, he focuses on developing individual skills for players of all levels at his Champions Academy Training Facility in Indianapolis. He works with all ages and ability levels, including recent NBA first round draft choices Greg Oden, Mike Conley, George Hill, Courtney Lee, and Eric Gordon.

So, with all of that experience and ability to teach players how to play basketball, he has put together what I feel is one of the best DVDs that I have in my coaching library–Mandatory Moves. In the DVD, Coach Schilling goes shows how he teaches individual moves from various spots on the floor. The DVD is more than just demonstration. He is working with three young high school players and you can see not only what he teaches, but also how he teaches it, and how the players benefit and improve immediately from the teaching points he emphasizes.

This DVD is something that players and coaches from every level will be able to apply immediately to their games to improve themselves, or to develop the individual skills their players need to make plays that will improve whatever offense you run.
