These drills came from Alan Stein’s Coaching Nuggets Collection.

They cover many areas of coaching basketball. He even put my 37 ideas pdf in there!

He has 11 pdfs available with a lot of great coaching ideas.

Here is the link if you are interested in downloading them:

http://www.strongerteam.com/download/coachingnuggets.aspx

These are 4 drills that Jeremy Lin uses as a part of his scoring workout. There are more drills from the workout available at the URL above.

EXTENDED LAYUPS

Because he isn’t the most athletic player, Jeremy must do a good job of extending to the basket on all layups to separate from defenders.

Drill: Player takes large strides to jump and make extended layup on both sides of the rim. For next rep players self passes to FT line for catch, pivot and score.

STEP THROUGH LAYUPS

Jeremy must also use the art of misdirection to score against larger help defenders.

Drill: Same concept as extended layups but make first step a misdirection jab step before extending into layup. Done on both sides of the rim.

STOP AND GO ATTACKS

This is the move that Jeremy used on John Wall to get the dunk the other night. Defenders try hard to stop NY’s pick and roll. Jeremy reads this well and makes defenders pay by rejecting the screen and attacking.

Drill: Cone is screen (chair can be used too). Player sets up the screen and then makes movement towards it. Player quickly crosses back to other hand and attacks rim with layups already practiced or pull up jump shot.

BOUNCE OUT TO RE-ATTACKS

Lin has great ball handling ability. He is able to keep a play alive when bouncing out from help defense to re-attack.

Drill: Come off pick and roll and attack second cone. Bounce out with dribble and re-attack either driving baseline or crossing over to the middle. Do drill to both sides of the court.

This is a short video that is a good message for players to hear regarding basketball practice.

The thoughts apply to both in season practices and to out of season workouts. I think that sometimes it is good for the players to hear another voice other than their coach’s. Especially if that voice has credibility. Even if you don’t want your players to watch the video, I hope it gives you some thoughts to add some variety to the messages you give your players regarding practice and skill development.

It is a youtube video, which I know some of your servers may block.

The video below shows a good drill to put into your player’s out of season skill workout drills. It is a good way to end a workout. The contest is not open to beat Gannon, but you can certainly set up a contest to have your players compete against each other or themselves on the time that it takes them to make the 4 shots. The video is a youtube video and the sound is not the best, so you might have to adjust your volume setting to hear his instructions.

These two shooting drills came from Coach Creighton Burns’ Newsletter

Knight SHOOTING DRILL”

*How to do the drill:
1. You need three players (shooter, passer, rebounder)
2. Two balls
3. One Minute on the clock

Goal to make 15 shots out of 25 attempts

The passer can only pass. The rebounder can only rebound and then pass to the passer. (I know you realize the passer passes to the shooter.)

The Rebounder counts the shots attempted.

The Passer counts the shots made.

The drill starts with the shooter having a ball and the passer having a ball.

The shooter will move from Elbow to Elbow in the drill. (Must HUSTLE!)

Their should be some type of punishment if the shooter does not get the25 attempts or the 15 makes.

*Change up to the drill. You can have the shooter go from elbow to the wing and back to the elbow. S/he should move about 12′. You may need to put a mark with chalk on the floor so the shooter will know where to shoot from. (All the other rules are the same.) (This is great for taking shots at game speed.)

________________________________________________________________

UT SHOOTING DRILL

*The Explanation is below the diagram
________________________
l l
l 2 l
l l
_________

1 3

“Three Man-Two Ball Shooting Three Pointing Shooting Drill”

1. 1 has a ball ready to shoot
2. 2 has a ball under the basket
3. 3 is spotted up behind the arc

*Procedure

1. The drill begins with 1 taking a shot and 2 under the basket will make a pass to 3 for a three point shot.
2. The passer (2) sprints outside anywhere behind the three point line.
3. The first shooter (1) follows his shot, rebounds, and passes to a player spotted up behind the arc.
4. The drill continues for 1 minute and each player has to make 6 three point shots. (They count their
own made shots.) (Penalty if they don’t reach 18 total makes)

*Remember this and you can do the drill. After you shoot follow your shot rebound it (missed or made) and pass to a player behind the three point line. Do not stay under the goal after you rebound your shot just sprint behind the three point line and you will get a pass from another player who has just rebounded his/her shot.

*You can shoot from the corners, wings or point area. *If there are three players and two balls someone has to be open for a pass after you follow your shot and get the rebound.

I think it is important for all players to play one on one both during practices during the season and during out of season workouts. I also think that it is important to make the one on one meaningful and as close to game-like as it can be. Here is an idea to improve the way players play one on one and what they get out of it.

Continuous 1-on-1 Players need to play 1-on-1 in practice and in workouts. In continuous 1-on-1 there is no “checking up top.” Once a player scores, the other player who is now on offense, takes the ball out of the net and spins it out anywhere behind the three point arc, goes out and meets the pass, squares to the basket and plays from there. Even if the shot is missed, if the defender gets the rebound, he or she spins it out behind the arc and plays from there. It is a good toughness and conditioning drill to finish a workout with and it forces players to go from offense to defense and defense to offense in a more game-like way.

Another version of this drill is to play with the same rules, but make it “make it, take it.” So, if you score, you get the ball out of the net and spin it out behind the three point arc. You lose the transition from Offense to Defense, but it does reward the defense for a stop when they get one.

The Coaching Toolbox has hundreds of resources for coaching basketball including basketball practice, basketball plays, basketball drills, basketball quotes, basketball workouts, basketball poems, and more!

I wrote this as a handout for our players at Alodia Basketball Academy and thought it was worth posting on the blog as well.

In your individual workouts and as you play 5 on 5, make sure that you have a plan and a series of drills to expand these three areas of your game. Our skills training sessions at Alodia are designed to help players be more effective in each of these areas, and to learn when to apply each in a game.

Three Point Shot: Work to develop the ability to hit the three point shot after coming off screens and to relocate when the ball is dribbled into the lane or fed to the post. You need to improve (through practice) your ability to get the shot off quickly, but without hurrying on all of your catches. You do that by being prepared before you catch the ball, not by increasing the speed of your shooting motion.

Midrange Game: If you can hit the three point shot consistently, defenders will jump, or at least come out of their stance, to challenge your shot. Learn to believably shot fake the three-pointer and make a getaway dribble for a midrange shot, or to get into the lane for a “runner” or “floater.” Having the ability to hit that running shot in the lane is key as defenders in the lane get bigger and better when you move up the competitive ladder.

Driving Game: Once you can hit that one dribble pull up shot, a helping defender will come after you, so you need to have dribble moves to beat that helper and get to the basket to score. Attack the basket to score, and not just to draw a foul. If you drive with the mindset to score (even if you are fouled), you have a much better chance of getting the basket and a free throw. The other benefit of this mindset is that you might not always get the foul call, but if you put the ball in the basket, you don’t have to rely on the official’s call to score.

Make sure that you are consciously practicing each of these aspects of individual offense to be able to fit them into your team’s offensive scheme. Look for how and when to apply those areas in games and then evaluate the effectiveness of each and what you need to work on to improve each one.

Here are some things that coaches expect of their perimeter players:

Be aggressive and make good things happen for the team and your teammates

Be a leader. Not everyone is a vocal leader, but anyone can lead by example.

Be a smart player. Soak up everything your coaches teach you and study the great players.

Know what your coach wants done and give it everything you have to make it happen.

Encourage your teammates. Be there for them if they are struggling. Bring out the best in them.

Focus your vision under the net so that you see the whole floor when you have the ball.

Use your dribble to get out of trouble, not to get into trouble.

Make the easy pass and the simple play. Trying to make ESPN type highlight plays gets you beat.

Don’t pick up your dribble without a pass or a shot.

Never cross the half court line and pick up your dribble. That invites double teams.

Sheridan College Generals Basketball

A couple of Days ago, I published Coach Steve Smiley’s Perimeter workout. Here is his post workout:

Post Skill Development Workout

POST WARM-UP (Approximately one minute on each of these, SIT INTO YOUR GAME)

Two Ball Dribbling Sequence + Shelton Drills

Dribbling and Juggling

Take Infield with tennis ball (Low and wide, toes to the outside, SIT INTO YOUR GAME)

Imaginary Defense (Talk your defense, yell it out)

Moving without the ball (Work independently or work in pairs with another post or perimeter)

Break Package Sprints (To the rim for crunch)

Crab Dribbles

Shooting Progression

Groove your go to hooks

Mikan Sequence at one basket or Full Court Mikans

REMEMBER

Keep it straight, Aim for the BACK HALF OF THE BASKET

Get it up. Top of the shot; top of the board (WE WANT A CONSISTENT ARC ON EACH SHOT)

Hold a one second high follow through

Land six inches closer on your shot

Use a feeder, tossback, spin yourself a pass, or flip yourself a pass.

Chin all receptions. Slow down, hold your seal, vary your rhythm. Be quick without hurrying.

The pass will lead you to a shot if you have angles. If played behind, quarter turn on passes to your shoulder.

If played behind and the pass is at your face, chin the ball and look to the middle for diver or double team

GET YOUR EYES ON THE TARGET

Be low and wide on catch, be lower and WIDER on your move. Heel to toe on your move.

Try to get to the front of the rim on your middle move.

GUIDELINES

All lay-ups must be clean to be a make

Put back all misses but they do not count as makes.

Use free throw swish rules in counting your free throws.

Swish = +1             Make Hitting Rim = 0           Miss = -1

4. If you have trouble with a move, break it down and spend extra time on just that move e.g. REPETITIONS TO AD NAUSEAM

5. BE A SKILL PLAYER NOT A DRILL PLAYER.

6. The technique and proper and quick execution at games speeds is what we care about.

7. Periodically check your heart rate with a ten second count and multiply by six.

220 – Age = Maximum Heart Rate Get to 90% of maximum heart rate e.g. 180+

HUTCH’S POST WORKOUT

This should take 30 minutes and you have to MAKE ALL THE SHOTS before going to the next sequence.

You should do this workout every day and shorten it for game warm-ups.

PROPER AND QUICK REPETITION OF EACH MOVE GOING 100% IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS.

MOST SHOTS ARE TAKEN FROM YOUR FAVORITE SIDE OF THE BASKET.

If you want to work from your non-favorite side, that is fine, but you MUST WORK from your favorite side.

1. Four baseline power moves from your favorite side
2. Four jump hooks to middle of the lane from your favorite side
3. Four turnaround jump shots, pivoting on your baseline foot, from your favorite side
4. Four turnaround jump shots with a shot fake, go to hook to the middle of the floor from your favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

5. Four flash to the free throw line for a jump shot from your favorite side
6. Four flash to the free throw line for a jump shot from your non-favorite side
7. Four step out to the short corner for a jump shot from your favorite side
8. Four step out to the short corner for a jump shot from your non-favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

9. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your favorite side
10. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your non-favorite side
11. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your favorite side
12. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a jump shot from your non-favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

13. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your favorite side
14. Four flash to the free throw line for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your non-favorite side
15. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your favorite side
16. Four step out to the short corner for a SHOT FAKE to a power shot or dunk from your non-favorite side

FREE THROW SWISH +2/-2

If you lose (-2), do push-ups or a down and back sprint

If you win (+2), shoot a string of made free throws. If you miss, a swish lets you continue on.

IF YOU FEEL THAT A SEGMENT OR A MOVE IS NOT UP TO YOUR STANDARDS, ISOLATE THAT MOVE WITH MANY REPETITIONS SO YOU CAN PROPERLY EXECUTE AND FEEL THE MOVE.

YOU WILL WANT TO DO EXTRA WORK ON YOUR GO TO MOVE OUTSIDE OF HUTCH’S WORKOUT

MAKE FIVE IN A ROW; PUTBACKS COUNT

Player will shoot five jump shots from the free throw line or either of the baseline step out areas.

If he makes the shot the ball can hit the floor, but if he misses it he must rebound the ball before it hits the floor.

The putback must be clean to count as a make.

If you miss and the ball hits the floor the player must start over from the beginning.

Do this workout from all three areas once a day. Add the shot fake if you want extra work or just mix it in randomly.

ENDING WORK-OUT

You can choose to end with two five pound weight plates and do one minute segments of

a. Imaginary defense

b. Moving without the ball

c. Break package sprints

YOU CAN’T DO ALL THE DRILLS EACH DAY BUT YOU CAN DO ALL THE SKILLS

BE A PRACTICE PLAYER FIRST. PROPERLY AND QUICKLY EXECUTE THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE GAME FOR THE WELFARE OF THE TEAM

PRACTICE AND PLAY WITH THE INTENSITY AND POISE OF A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM

MAKE SURE YOU STRETCH AFTER YOUR WORKOUT IS COMPLETED

Words of wisdom for point guards (presented by Steve Nash at the Nike Point Guard Academy

“You should always want your coach to be critical. It gives you an opportunity to learn and to overcome adversity.”

“You maximize your potential by being humble develop a work ethic, strive to be a good person, and to be the best teammate you can be.”

“Use your scoring ability to be a better passer, and your passing skills to become a better scorer.”

“You can’t be a point guard who gets into the lane and always passes. Capitalize on the real estate you have gained.”

“Point Guard must be able to pass with both hands equally off the dribble.”

‘”I am always thinking how can I get myself better.”

“On the fast break, after 2 or 3 hard dribbles you should see the whole floor and know where all your teammates are.”

These ideas from Steve Nash were sent to me by Coach Eric Musselman
